Hotkey to close dialog

Does anyone know what key combination to use in order to close OS X's small dialog boxes (namely the Font Palette)? Cmd-W doesn't seem to work on these, nor does Esc. Irritating when I have to interrupt my workflow to move my hand to the mouse & click a shrunken-down close button to get the damned thing to go away.
