Motherboard That Has IDE Ports

Recommended Posts

My mom is mailing her PC to me. She bought a bigger power supply, and in the process of installing it something happened and they fried the motherboard, so they're mailing it to me and I'm going to fix it up.

I'm looking for a new motherboard if possible that will fit inside her existing ATX case, preferably fitted for AMD CPUs, and with at least two IDE ports. I'm finding all kinds of affordable motherboards that fit the requirements on Tigerdirect.com, except none of them have IDE ports. The internal hard drives she has, and her CD drives as well, all connect via IDE instead of SATA, and all of the newer boards I'm finding, even cheaper ones, come with SATA connectors only.

Anybody got any suggestions? It doesn't have to be super-expensive, she uses the computer to browse the internet and edit family photos, so it's not necessary that it support 500 GB of RAM.

I think the processor is an older AMD Athlon, single core, 32 bit, at ~1.6 Ghz, but I'm going with the assumption that everything on the mainboard, RAM and CPU are fried, and am replacing those parts and just plugging in her old hard drives. My younger brother said when he hooked up the new power supply a spot next to one of the USB ports, which had failed a few months ago anyway, turned red and melted, and the machine refused to power on.

I'm aware the OS may need to be re-installed, that's too easy of a fix, I'm just trying to find a new-ish mainboard with two IDE ports. May get the IDE to SATA adapters, I've never used one, any issues I should be aware of with those?

Assuming I can find an adapter to plug in her IDE hard drives, here's what I've found so far.

Mainboard/CPU: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1512545&Sku=B69-5436

RAM: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=708908&CatId=4534

Should more than sate her needs, and maybe my little brother he comes over and uses it to play PC games occasionally.

you may have troubles with booting (and or drivers) from controller card. Either get second hand mobo that will be suitible with the cpu/ram or get new hdd as well. Cheapest SATA is $70.

A possibility -

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=171520&CatId=4297 It has 1 IDE controller to run two ide devices. Eg harddrive for your windows boot partition as the master and your cd/dvd drive as slave device.)

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1070704&CatId=508 inserted into one of the boards pci slots will run upto 4 additional ide devices. eg 2nd or 3rd hard drives/dvd drives

The ram you mentioned earlier should work with this board too.
