Productive Things To Do.. Advice

Recommended Posts

Hi Neowinians, was wondering if any of you had any ideas on my predicament.

I'm at University in Cardiff, doing Software Development (w/ Web Programming).. Its a really easy course so far and I don't have much work set to do outside uni and only have about 8 hours a week.I'm living in halls and having a great time, really social side, go out and socialise A LOT.

But theres times when everyone else is in there rooms and I'm in my room, I run out of things to do. I find myself refreshing Facebook/Twitter/Neowin over and over again.

I'm a productive guy, I dont really see the point in playing games or anything.

Has anyone got any ideas of what I could do at these times, like now, when I'm sitting at my computer? I love websites, and the internet.

If anyone wants to ask me more questions.. or even better has a suggestion, would love to hear!

Tim

Go for a walk outside? Do some exercise? Take up photography?

When I was at Uni, I would grab my camera and wander around town looking at people and looking for photo opportunities.

Take up writing. Fiction, poetry, keeping a journal, reporting... It's all good. That's what I do, anyway. There's always activism, too. If you feel strongly about something, you could try and do something about it. Work on one of the campaigns against SOPA, maybe, write letters and spread the word. Or, if you're interested in it and patient enough, you could always give something like genealogy a shot.

I'm having a hard time picturing a person that socialises a lot IRL, is a computer student and still has good 8 hours of free time. It's logically impossible, counterintuitive. Or maybe you don't need sleep at all? Well, anyway...

Code stuff! Loads of it, useless stuff. Compile stuff yourself. And keep track of it. Blog about it. Accountable experience with every little thing there is will help to land a job. I say it from my experience (or lack, thereof).

I'd argue (not to convince you but just for the sake of it) that games (that use web as a platform) rake in good monies. But in order to create such a game one has to understand how games work and what people expect to see.

Well, first year is typically easy and then they pile on the work in the second and third years. So if you're into your course there are probably things you could do to build on your skills and make it easier later on.

And you gotta check out all the societies and clubs at your uni.

The point about games is true, never thought of it like that.

Well I socialise in the evening, when everyone else isn't doing uni work.. I'm talking about stuff to do in the afternoons which I almost ALWAYS have free.

go to the gym, this is something i wish i had made a lot more time for at uni

Go to the gym a few times a week anyway, thanks :)

Build a website :p

Any ideas?

Already in a few societies, my uni is generally lacking in them.
