Woman, 25, Suffers Rare Condition Preventing Puberty

Recommended Posts

A 25-year-old Irish woman has a rare condition that has prevented her from ever going through puberty and stunted her growth, The Daily Mail reported.

Kate Quinn has Caudal Regression Syndrome, which means her lower spine never developed properly. The disease occurs in one in every 25,000 births.

Medical problems include an incomplete tailbone region and sometimes deformity of the pelvis and spine. In severe cases, patients become paralyzed.

Quinn, who is 4 feet, 9 inches tall, said she has spent the past few years ?hiding away.?

Doctors have tried giving her injected hormones to stimulate puberty and breast growth, but the treatment did not work.

?The longer it goes on, the worse you feel ? because at 12 or 14 you feel you might develop, but now at 25 you start wondering if it's too late and ask yourself if you'll ever develop,? said Quinn, who lives in Mooncoin, County Kilkenny in Ireland.

Quinn said she hopes to find a solution soon, as she wants to become a ?real woman? and find love.

Geez, that's horrifying on so many levels! It's also strange that doctors can fail at basic endocrinology so badly: even if you bombarded Quinn with even semi-regular doses of human/synthetic hormones to stimulate growth, it's still nowhere near the amount needed to "force" her body into "adulthood". And let's not even get into the "Cirque de Soleil"-style hormonal control and acrobatics typically seen in adolescents during puberty!! :omg:

OTOH, that "real woman" bit is a tad ironic (and false at the same time). I feel kind of bad that she projects her sociological hardships onto her perceived body's age/size, rather than the uninformed's perception of her.

Should read A 25-year-old woman is trapped in the body of a 12-year-old who looks like a 45 year old.

Very much so! When they said 25 year old and I looked at the picture, I couldnt believe it. She looks well over 40 like you said. Seems like with that condition, she would look younger if anything.

I guess she drinks a lot to cope with it.

Hello,

You do know what not everyone from Ireland drinks?.

Not everyone is fat in america.

Thank You.

Have a great day!

Touch a nerve? He neither said nor implied that everyone in Ireland drinks. He said she probably did since people were commenting on how old her facial features look. Drinking a lot can affect that.

She doesn't look "trapped in a 12-year-old body" to me....

She looks relatively mid-20's-ish to me!

She's 4' 9" tall. That's actually shorter than many 12 year olds that I know. She also looks like she is rather flat chested, which would add to the young look. Look beyond her face and she does look very young. I used to work with a woman who was a similar size, and people often thought she was far younger than she really was. The funny thing was that she worked in the girls clothes department of the store, so I always joked with her about shopping for clothes while she was working.

There was an episode of Law and Order:SVU with a woman who had the same or a similar condition. People attacked her boyfriend because they thought he was a pedophile.

Oh, and I wouldn't exactly classify 1 in 25,000 as a particularly rare condition. That would be about 280,000 people in the world.

hormone theorpy doesn't help in this case?
She has been injected with hormones for seven years in a bid to encourage her body to go into puberty - but to no avail.

Stereotypes are there for a reason.....because a lot of people in Ireland drink and a lot of people in the US are fat. They don't just pull random stereotypes out of mid-air.
