Working on a new build. What do you think?

Recommended Posts

I posted some questions a few days ago and you guys helped me out a lot. I've taken some time and put together this build, and I was wondering if I really messed something up. My budget is 1000 dollars, and this comes to $1009.92. I'm not sure I can do much better without spending a lot more money.

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated!

I gather it will be used for gaming because of the vid cards.

You are making a mistake with that HDD. It is painfully slow.

Green drives are nothing more than creative marketing which helps reduce shrinkage.

You think its a good deal in reality you are buying a failed decent drive which was downclocked and badged "green" because it couldnt pass QC as a normal Barracuda.

So - rethink your drive - and you dont need an 850W PSU - even a crappy one like that...not to mention 16GB of RAM

You havent stated what all it will be used for - but if its gaming - you aren't going to need more than 4GB (so go with 8)

Are you sure you want that hardware config ? I have built 2 rigs in the past couple of months for people who had $1000 budget and built computers alot sexier than some AMD junk.

I wont do the shopping for you - but know you can do better - with less.

You might re think about going with 1 video card. An use the money for a 1 SSD 120GB drive for the OS and a 2 TB drive for storage.

Also, you might even think about backups too. An get a 2 TB for system backups.

Is there no way to edit your original post anymore, or am I just blind??? Weird.

Anyway, I have spent hours upon hours researching this, and I feel like this is probably what I'm going with. In case you don't assume from the parts, I'll be using it for gaming. Once again, I am open to your suggestions....

CPU: Intel Core i5-2500K BX80623I52500 Unlocked Processor - Quad Core, 6MB L3 Cache, 1MB L2 Cache, 3.30 GHz (3.70 GHz Max Turbo), Socket H2 (LGA1155), 95W, Fan, Retail

GPU: GIGABYTE GV-R695OC-1GD Radeon HD 6950 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card

PSU: Rosewill Xtreme Series RX850-S-B 850W Continuous @40?C ,80 PLUS Certified, ATX12V v2.2 & EPS12V v2.91, SLI Ready CrossFire Ready, Active PFC "Compatible with Core i7, i5" Power Supply

(Stuck with a bigger PSU. I'm going to eventually be running dual HD6970's, and I feel like I'll need the extra power. Is 850w enough for these two cards in crossfire?)

I would go with WDC black instead of seagate. Also consider putting ssd for your os (like 100GB) it is big difference

Ok, any particular reason to go with the wdc black instead of the seagate? Just wondering as the specs of the two are almost identical, and the seek time of the seagate was actually better.

And yes, I plan on getting a SSD someday, but right now I really need the storage.

I was buying only seagates until they messed up seriously with their 7200.11 hdds. It was a big mess.

Sounds fine dude, run with it. And get a nice heatsink at some point and overclock the heck out of that sucker. If you go from 3.3-3.4 GHz to 4.6-4.8 GHz, it buys some more FPS in the heavy weight titles and it does not take much voltage.
