OS X Lion Slipstream

Recommended Posts

I'm new to the OS X Lion so bare with me as I'l likely to be mixing the terminology with Windows.

Does Apple release slipstreamed media for thier updates so that I don't have to install the updates after a clean install, without resorting to using third party tools?

Apple release updated versions of the Lion installer via the App Store. Currently it's at version 10.7.2, with 10.7.3 expected soon-ish. To my knowledge there is no way to integrate updates which aren't part of 10.7.x point releases though.

through the appstore, I went to the appstore and searched Lion but its already installed according to the appstore and the mac shipped with Lion

1) Open App Store.app

2) Alt/Option-click the "Purchases" tab.

3) Click "Install"

That allows you to re-download Lion ;)

Hold the option key when clicking on the "purchased" tab in the app store - then you should be able to download even if it's installed already.

After the download is finished look in your Applications folder and right click "Install Mac OS X Lion" and select "Show Package Content".

inside there shoudl be a Contents/Shared Support folder with the lion image called "InstallESD.dmg". You can burn it or even better restore it to an USB stick with disk utility and boot from it holding the option key at restart.

I'm not sure if this also works if Lion was preinstalled and never bought with the itunes account.

You got it pre-install so you have to do it the hard way. You have to connect your mac to another drive or some where big enough to store the download. Boot into recovery, command R I think, and go thru the first part of the install process. You have to watch it near the end of the download because it will want to reboot and install Lion again. You just remove the drive from the mac on reboot and boot up normally. Then just reconnect the drive and you will see the dmg installer file on that drive. Keep in mind when you download lion this way its a copy specific to the hardware of that mac meaning its not going to work on other models like the version from the apps store.

Just an FYI: if you use the Lion Internet Restore functionality, it automatically downloads the latest version. That obviously wouldn't help you for installing the latest version on other Macs, though.

I remember a new feature they introduced in 10.6 Snow Leopard :

If you reinstall an inferior version of 10.6.x on a machine with 10.6.y, you don?t have to reinstall all the updates, as it stores them somewhere on your hard drive and it will install them right away as if you had the newest release.

thanks guys I tried that but its not listed under Purchased is this because it came factory installed with Lion or did I do something wrong?

Don't you get a redeem code for Lion and iLife for the App Store? You should be able to read the instructions in the manual.

Did you register it to an appleid when you first booted it up? Do you have an appleid?

Yes, I have and AppleID, when you say register do you mean completing the details form and entering your AppleID registration during the first start/setup, if that is the one then Yes I did.

You'll need to speak to Apple then because Mac OS X Lion should become instantly accessible via the AppStore along side iPhoto, GarageBand and IMovie.
