Researchers find cancer in ancient Egyptian mummy

Recommended Posts

CAIRO (January 29, 2012)?American University Professor Salima Ikram says the discovery of prostate cancer in a 2,200-year-old mummy indicates the disease was caused by genetics, not environment.

The genetics-environment question is key to understanding cancer.

Ikram, a member of the team that studied the mummy in Portugal for two years, said Sunday the mummy was of a man who died in his 40s.

She said this was the second oldest known case of prostate cancer.

"Living conditions in ancient times were very different; there were no pollutants or modified foods, which leads us to believe that the disease is not necessarily only linked to industrial factors," she said.

A statement from AUC says the oldest known case came from a 2,700 year-old skeleton of a king in Russia.

The answer to the genetics vs environment question is not a mutually exclusive one. Just because there is proof that some cancers occurred thousands of years ago doesn't rule out the possibility that environmental factors aren't contributing to new types of cancer or a higher rate of cancer in today's world.

Though I guess it IS important to know that there are some cancers that are natural. Hopefully this will lead to something beneficial.

I will simply point out that the body responds to the Beliefs of the owner. ;)

I definitely agree to a certain extent, such as I do feel it is mind over matter. And I do believe once you are told you have something, it will be worse as you know now it.

Yes because those Ancient Romans didn't poison themselves with lead pipes and the Egyptians didn't use white lead and mercury as cosmetics. No it was all healthy and natural.

You simply pointed it out, and it has been filed under nonsense. I believe I am superman all the time, but I have yet to fly, or stop a train with my hand, or shoot fricken laser beams from my fricken eyes.

I hope I just misunderstand your comment. Because I couldnt imagine a person alive today can just simply "believe" that they dont have cancer.

...., or shoot fricken laser beams from my fricken eyes.

That's actually possible, if at low intensities. Last summer some gene jockeys engineered ocular cells that could generate weak laser beams.

i thought every person is born with cancer in a dormant form?, and just unlucky if it "activates" so finding it in a guy in ancient egypt isnt exactly surprising.

Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of cells... and our bodies are created (and maintained) by the growth of cells. But the key difference is that normal growth is controlled.

The key is to Believe that your body is healthy, and have a strong desire to live.

Falling in love, for example, could restore the desire to Live.

that is stupidest thing I have ever heard. plenty of people have the "will" to live and im sure the strength of someone can prolong the inevitible. But the desire to live is not going to make a fatal disease just vanish.

I have read long time ago that the people who mummify these bodies die very soon due to radiation poisoning but i dont have a source to back it up.

I really think that that could be the cause of cancer in these mummies.

I have to ask this seriously, do you know anyone that has actually died from cancer? I (unfortunately) know of a few people, including 2 family members, and I am pretty sure at least one of them did their best to wish it away completely and I know for damn sure they all had an incredibly strong desire to live.

So I have to say your comment is truly ludicrous, It alludes to the belief that if someone has been diagnosed with terminal cancer that somehow it was that persons will not to live that helped them pass, and not the cancer itself, which is absolutely not the case.

I agree. I have seen this happen with my own eyes. In many cases you will live longer not knowing.
