Waze for Android Updates, Adds New Maps, Driver-Friendly UI, and More Social Features

Android: Waze, our pick for the best turn-by-turn navigation app for Android, updated today to include an entirely new UI that minimizes buttons and tools so they're all accessible under one spring-out on-screen menu, easier-to-navigate maps that you can now easily spin around and navigate with one hand, and new location-based information from services like Yelp and FourSquare.

The first thing you'll notice when you update Waze is the updated interface. All of the buttons and widgets and lingering pop-ups on the maps are gone. The text is sharp and clear, you can twist the maps around and move them with two fingers on the screen instead of double-tapping or dragging, and all of your menu options are available under one button that lives in the lower left corner of the screen. Driver icons are large and clear, and tapping them brings up their current speed and direction, and that window goes away quickly without you having to dismiss it. The app is faster, looks better, and is easier to use, especially if you're on the go....

If Waze is Lifehacker's pick for the best turn-by-turn navigation app, then I guess they've had some pretty major updates. I haven't used it in a year or two, but last time I did it was pretty pointless. I'll have to check it out.

there it goes. privacy no more. I know you can choose to not to install it but still

As with nearly any app like this, you can choose who and what you share. If you want to be private, don't share with anyone and just use the other features. Surely it wouldn't be called the best navigation app just for the social aspect. I tend to think social navigation is somewhat pointless since the likelihood of seeing a friend on while you're driving, or specifically, navigating isn't that great, and the fact that you see them would probably mean nothing to you and your trip, however the fact that it can use input from users to access road conditions is clever.
