What are your feelings toward 343?

Recommended Posts

I had a nice little debate on the matter of whether 343 deserves the ability to take the Halo title on its own and thought that I wouldn't mind some others opinions on the matter also. I stand against it because I feel as if 343 had an advantage over other companies so I don't personally see them as a legit video game maker whereas Bungie started from the ground up with this and therefore should own it until it dies. Your ideas please...

I love every Halo game that Bungie has made, especially 3 and Reach, and would have loved for them to have kept it forever, but I'm not going to slate 343 without giving them a chance... I like the updates the title update brings, such as reduced/no bloom and the ability to kill people in armour lock.

343 is made up of mostly Bungie staff, including the Halo lead Frankie. So, yup, they will continue to be solid. Check out Halo CE Anniversary Edition....the hard work there do is there in leaps and bounds.

What I mean of this, and my understanding could be wrong, however I understood that 343 was more or less riding on Bungie's back while all the halo games were doing their thing.

I don't really have opinion on 343. It's hard to form an opinion when they have not released a game yet. There's not much there to base a like/dislike off.

Again, from my understanding here, but I believe that Halo Wars was a 343 game. I believe that Bungie was there to help/support them with the game however they wanted to take the lead on that game.

I like how you did point CE Anniversary. From what I can tell, they didn't do much to the game. They replaced the graphics and redid the sound effects, however it doesn't appear that they edited any of the major coding. Also, I was super excited about the implementation of the reach engine, then very disappointed that they just launched the multiplayer feature of reach. Last little rant about that game, but that game needed to have its 4 player co-op. If they were trying to make it up to date, they needed to add the 4 player co-op back. This is why I am not too excited about their next game. They didnt take the initiative towards the last game.

Good. As do many others like that I point that out. We are loving it!

The graphics are in the coding. The sound effects are in the coding. The addition of co-op over XBL is in the coding. The fans (us) did NOT want to change what Halo CE was known for. So they did what the fans wanted. Game is stellar, and their initiative is up there at the top with all all great devs. But your opinion is noted.

Then again, I am not surprised it turned out so good, since they are mostly Bungie anyway, lol.

It's worth mentioning that they developed Halo Anniversary whilst working on Halo 4 at the same time, and they intentionally chose to keep the gameplay engine of the original game alone. They used engine tech by Sabre Interactive for the updated graphics engine that would work on top of the original gameplay engine - this was more a "remaster" than a remake, and the multiplayer wasn't developed by them - but by Certain Affinity (made by ex-Bungie staffers and others years back), who also developed Halo Waypoint for 343i. It probably wasn't a "high priority" project for them, likely just a bit of fan service filler to satisfy the yearly Halo release - as far as I'm aware there's been a new Halo game every year since Halo 3, and that'll continue with Halo 4 this year.

Ergo they haven't shown much of their development talent yet, so I can't say whether they'll be any good. Then again, I never rated Bungie that highly either. Good gameplay designers and story designers, but I was never impressed with their graphics engines - especially Halo 3's, nor their artistry... I always thought Retro Studios out done them in that regard.
