Would Like Advice On a Build

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, I'm thinking about throwing these products into a case with a 1k watt PSU I have on the way. Any thoughts? I'd like to some gaming, I was gonna SLI 2 of the graphics cards by the way. Thanks for your input in advance.

I'd go Z68 chipset with a smallish SSD like that. I'd also drop more on a single video solution and less on the CPU cooler, unless you plan on doing 3D. You didn't list what you are doing with it but guessing 16GB and an i7 are overkill as well - bigger SSD?

Gaming mostly, yeah I figured 16 was a bit overkill I'll look at 8 I think that should be decent. So I'll check into lowering it to an i5 maybe, and boosting the video card. Thanks for your input I appreciate it.

Ok so I switched to a z68, dropped the ram to 8gb and went with a 120gb SSD instead still looking into video cards. Oh and I switched to a 3.30ghz i5. Any advice on video cards, and whether or not you think the stock cpu cooler will be fine or if I should get an aftermarket one, and if so which one?

It would be nice if you could name the product in a post and not just put a link. It might be just me, but I find it easier to check if I do not have to open many links just to see what we are talking about. :)

As for build.

First I would drop the SSD, CPU cooler and as you have already done drop CPU to i5 2500K.

That should let you get a better GPU, which is what will matter most in gaming. I would get Nvidia 560 Ti or AMD HD6950 as a minimum.

Z68 mobo is a good thing to have as well.

After that you see how much you have left over and go for an SSD. Do not get me wrong, SSD is a great thing to have, but looking purely from gaming perspective GPU is more important. With SSD you will more imporvement in day to day tasks.

As for CPU cooler. Stock will be fine as long as you do not overclock. So I would suggest save your money for now and some time down the road when you have extra money and want to overclock get a better cooler.

On a side note, what PSU you have? and 1000W is a massive overkill for a build like this.

Memory: Check

GPU: Check

Cooler: Check

HDD: Check

SSD: Check

Motherboard: Would advise you to go with Z68. Slightly expensive, yes, but worth it.

CPU:

i72600 is a really good one, but what about i5 2500K? It is cheaper and will provide you tons of room for overclocking, as opposed to the locked i7 2600.

If you don't want to overclock, and really want i7, then go ahead, but my recommendation would be an i5 2500K. It is cheaper, and will give you room for that Z68 motherboard.

And if you want to go with i7 2600, there is no need for that cooler

If you are overclocking, make sure you get the "K" version of the i7 (unlocked multiplier). I assume you will overclock judging by the cooler you selected.

I agree with Muhammed regarding the processor. For gaming, the i7 wont have any siginificant gains over the i5. Save yourself $100 and get the i5 2500K and use the savings (plus the RAM savings) toward the 560 Ti. You will certainly notice a performance gain here and be able to run games at max settings, including BF3.

it seems like you have a decent budget for this build. i'd suggest you go for (2) cards right out of the gate - CFX some 7950s or something.

either SSD is fine if youre just looking for a drive for the OS and programs.

as for cpu coolers - i have a Prolimatech Megahalems. it's a beast and i love it. something like that would be a great choice.

Also, get rid of that 1000 W PSU.

You don't need it, unless, of course, you are gonna run dual 7970s with it

are you insane, what happens if he wants to plug an external car heater in it. Anything bellow 1000watts won't have the juice to warm up the room

So does he want to warm up the car or the room? Decide!

Agreed with overkill PSU. Can save some money by getting 850 or slightly lower.
