MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican troops have made an historic seizure of 15 tons of pure methamphetamine in the western state of Jalisco, the Mexican army said in a statement released late Wednesday.

Soldiers discovered the huge cache in the town of Tlajomulco de Zuniga, a suburb of Mexico's second-largest city, Guadalajara.

The statement had no other details but said it would publicly present the seizure on Thursday. Spokesmen answering the phone at the army's base in Guadalajara refused to comment further.

No one could say late Wednesday what the largest seizure was previously in Mexico.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime said total meth seizures worldwide were 31 metric tons in 2009, the most recent figures available.

Jalisco state has long been considered the hub of Sinaloa's methamphetamine trafficking, thought army statement didn't indicate which Mexican cartel may have been involved.

I am more surprised that Mexico has an Army than that they found drugs.

I wonder how much of it will mysteriously go missing.

I wonder how the army comes across these supposed large-figure busts and "discoveries". :/

IIRC, these synthetic controlled substances tend to be money vacuums to manufacture & traffic. Even under pressure from rival organizations, police, and martial authorities, you'd think the cartels and affiliated parties would keep better protection and logistical control over such a primary source of revenue.

Of course I'm inclined to think that a number of corrupt government/police/military personnel are working in collusion with (some of) the cartels to mitigate their "operation-critical" product loss elsewhere. \Tinfoil-hat-goes-on

I wonder how much of it will end up on the street anyways after the involved soldiers get their "cut".
