Cannibal Kills Man With an Axe

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- A Florida man charged with hacking a homeless Connecticut man to death with an ax and eating his brain was ordered Wednesday to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

Tyree Lincoln Smith, 35, stared blankly as he stood with his hands chained behind his back during his arraignment in Bridgeport Superior Court on a murder charge. It was his first court appearance since he was returned to Connecticut on Tuesday following his arrest last week in Lynn Haven, Fla.

Smith, a Floridian who grew up in Ansonia, Conn., is charged in the Dec. 15 killing of Angel Gonzalez, whose body was found on the third floor of an abandoned home in Bridgeport.

Prosecutor Donal Collimore urged the judge to set a high bond, describing the crime as "extremely heinous."

Talitcha Frazier, a sister-in-law of the victim, said she remembered seeing Smith asking for change on the street.

"I think at the time I told him to get a job. I had no idea then that he had killed my brother-in-law," Frasier said on the courthouse steps after the hearing.

Smith came to the attention of authorities when his cousin in Connecticut contacted Bridgeport police about Gonzalez's slaying. She told detectives that Smith had arrived at her house Dec. 15 and said he wanted to "get blood on his hands" before going to the abandoned home, where he used to live, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

The next day, Smith returned to the cousin's house with blood on his pants, hands and an ax, the affidavit said. Police say he told his cousin he had "gotten his blood."

Smith's cousin said he told her that he was sleeping on a porch at the abandoned home when he was awakened by another man and invited inside. Then Smith described beating the man's face and head with the ax and collecting one of his eyes and some of his brain matter, which he consumed in a nearby cemetery, the affidavit said.

The cousin told detectives she called Smith's mother, who suggested to police on Dec. 16 that they check the abandoned home and that her son had "mental issues," the affidavit said.

Smith had left Connecticut for Florida on Friday on a bus, the cousin told detectives.

He also ate one of his eyes. A bit more of a detailed story -

Florida Police and U.S. Marshals have brought Tyree Lincoln Smith, a former Bridgeport, Conn., resident, into custody on charges of killing Angel Gonzalez with an axe, then proceeding to eat a portion of the victim?s brain and one of his eyeballs.

Gonzalez?s remains were discovered on the third floor of Smith?s former home, 216 Brooks Street, in Bridgeport. The decomposing body suffered critical injuries on his face and there was blood splattered on a wall nearby.

Nicole Rabb, Smith?s cousin, told police in the middle of December her cousin told her he needed ?to get blood on his hands? and decided to go to Beardsley Park and Brook Street, according to Smith?s warrant for arrest.

Rabb also revealed to Detective Harold Dimbo and Sergeant Giselle Doszpoi that Smith, 35, continually talked about Greek gods and called her ?Athena.? About 11 p.m. the same night, Smith returned to her house and banged on the door, but she refused to let him in.

The next afternoon Smith showed up at her house again and Rabb noticed blood on his pants, hands, and an axe he was holding. Smith told her he wanted to take a bath, according to the warrant. He went on to detail how fell asleep on his former home?s second-floor porch when a Hispanic man woke him and invited him into the third floor to get away from the cold. Smith then told her he began to beat the man and hack him up with an axe.

?Tyree told [Rabb] the blows to [Gonzalez?s] head were so severe that he was able to remove an eye from the man?s head along with pieces of brain matter and a piece of his skull," the warrant says.

Smith placed the items in a bag, then visited Lakeview Cemetery, where Rabb?s brother is buried.

?At the cemetery he said he ate the eyeball, which tasted like an oyster, and the brain matter,? according to the warrant.

Rabb said to detectives she informed Smith?s mother, Cheryl Smith, about what she had seen. The mother told Rabb she should tell the police and persuade them to check 216 Brooks St. ?because her son Tyree has mental issues and is trespassing at this property and squatting on the third floor.?

Rabb then aided the detectives in calling Tyree Smith?s cell phone. Smith said he was residing in Lynn Haven, Fla., confessed to being at 216 Brooks Street, admitted seeing the body and said there were no eyes in it. He said he did not touch it but admitted to the detectives that when his mother asked him if he killed the man, he said he did.

Police concluded Smith caught a Greyhound bus for Florida on Friday and arrived in Lynn Haven on Monday. Bridgeport police received the warrant for Smith?s arrest Tuesday and detailed the information to Lynn Haven police and the U.S. Marshals, who took Smith into custody Tuesday night.
