It is no doubt an inevitability. As for me and my peepers, I'm fine with the current resolutions on my MBP (1440x900) and my 27" cinema display (2560 x 1440). I'm sure that even higher resolution displays will no doubt look better, I just don't see it being that much better. Maybe I'm being naive.

The iPhone 3GS -> iPhone 4 was huge though. I think mostly because I hold my phone right in front of my face. Now my iPhone 3GS looks blurry.

Retina Displays everywhere will enhance readability to the point that it will make it perfect.

We?re not so far away from perfection with our current Apple displays though.
