Laptop too hot?

Recommended Posts

So my wife's laptop has been getting real hot to the touch lately, and our first assumption was fan blockage, but that does not seem to be the issue. I ran speedfan, but it can not adjust or read the rpms' on the fans (even though it lists 4) I ran CPUID's HWmonitor and it shows the core temp at 67C, is that too hot? I really do not know anything about laptop hardware so I am hoping someone can assist me here. Is there anything that can be done to help with the heat issue?

By fan blockage, I'm assuming you mean dust, right? So you've taken some compressed air and blown into the fan vents? That's a pretty common cause of high temps, so that's always the first thing to try.

Have you checked the task manager to see if something is pegging the CPU usage?

If you've done all the obvious stuff and are feeling brave, you could reseat the CPU with some fresh thermal paste. It is kind of a pain in the ass to do that though.

Depending on how old and/or dirty the computer is - the fan might be going out.

I bought 3 of these Cooler Master 12" laptop chillers - they work great and are 100% silent - get one and use it regardless of your heating issues

As far as your problem is concerned - if its an HP dv7- they are all hot - then they die.

how old and what kind of laptop is it ?

^ It's a Toshiba satellite l455d-s5976, and it is about 2 years old.

@astra, yes that is what I have done, made sure that there was not any dust or anything blocking the fan vents.
