+Warwagon MVC Posted February 25, 2012 MVC Share Posted February 25, 2012 How susceptible are you to vulnerabilities? When I mention 3rd party software I'm referring mainly to java, Flash and Adobe reader.

Karl L.
Is this poll only for Windows users? I would vote, but I don't run Windows and I'm not exactly sure what qualifies as third-party software for me; commercial software, maybe, or closed-source, or software not in the main repository? Thanks for the post. I think i'm going to make it Windows only, or this could be a large poll. On Windows We will just clarify 3rd party as the most common attack vectors as being Java, Flash and adobe reader.
Phouchg
My would-be answer "I always open email attachments from unknown people, especially those named sexygirl.jpg.exe and like" is missing.
Krome
The polling choice is a bit odd for me to choose. I am not sure which one would apply to me. Besides Windows 7 and Flash plug-ins, I just don't allow other third party that has many security holes in my system. Yes I am aware Windows itself has it but I update it the minute an update is available. Flash is sandboxed within Waterfox itself I believe. No Java is needed for what I do. Anti-virus is up-to-date with latest definition and I scan my drive regularly.
Ambroos
You just need to have a bit of a brain not to get infected. I never use a realtime AV and never get infected (I do scan with Nod32 every two months or so). I keep all my software up to date too. Sandboxing stuff is really going too far if you ask me. As soon as you spend more time on security than you'd ever spend on restoring your pc after a rare security breach you're overdoing it.

Then any infection I would happen to catch would be in the sandbox and all I would have to do instead of 'restoring my PC" is just empty the sandbox. Max Norris
In my case I just run firefox sandboxed with sandboxie. One of my favorite third party tools from any OS hands down, absurdly handy, along with on-demand scanners.
sudo
Vulnerabilities are there, through the whole stack, from the CPU (take a look at research on Intel's TXT, VT-d..etc) to the Chipset (take a look research on SPI-flash chips or on Intel AMT) to the the hypervisors (take a look at research on compromising Xen from Dom0, VM escapes) to the OS kernel (drivers, AV kernel modules), to the programs running in usermode. Vulnerabilities exist all along that stack, some easily more exploitable than others. So the question 'how susceptible are you to vulnerabilities' is a bit silly. Arceles
Pure common sense is the only protection needed for me, a free AV does the job with those USB drives that go around there and there but not real time scanning.
Ci7
I run Antivirus and I keep Windows and 3rd party software up to date i don't have java and hardly use adobe reader but keep it up to date nonetheless (made sure JS disabled in the settings) could careless about sandbox ?i keep parasitic software such as toolbars 100 miles away from my PC
