Should I upgrade from my iPhone 3GS

Recommended Posts

Since iOS 5 came out my iPhone 3GS is slow as ever, battery life rubbish, never get a full days use without charging, I usually have to charge it on the way home from work. I had a replacement about 6 months ago from apple as my last 3GS had a faulty silent switch. Few months after that I managed to put a scratch on the screen, now the charger port has a loose right clip and some how over the weekend I managed to crack the back charger port.. (I don't like cases on the phone because they make the phone to big and don't feel nice. I've tried lots. The phone still works but it's just slow to me... I'm sure I could still sell it for ?100+ anyway.

Basically I'm wanting to know if anyone recommends I upgrade to a 4 or 4S, I understand with the 4S its got a dual core processor and a friend said he never has his go slow on him like mine is, but interested in how the 4 copes with iOS5?

My contract isn't due to end for another 4 months but I don't want another 2 year contract because I'm sure its cheaper to just do a sim only contract (works out ?15+ cheaper a month than what I pay now).

I've seen the iPhone 4 go for ?290 on eBay so its like a ?200ish upgrade for a phone.

I also feel the iPhone 4/4S sits better in a case so would get one if I do upgrade to one.

edit:

missed out It also has 2 dead pixels on the screen as well, first time I've known about iPhones getting dead pixels...

If you have the money for a 4S, get it. If not, then simply wait for it.

In my opinion, you shouldn't get the 4.

Lay low for 4 months, when your contract ends. By that time, you'll have some money, hopefull, and then you can go for 4S

Also by that time the next iPhone might be around.

I just upgraded to a 4S from a 3GS a week ago.

I like the 4S but I prefer the design of the 3GS (stupid glass back on the 4S means some sort of case is needed which I never had with my 3GS which annoys me).

The 4S is much faster in every way (it also syncs MUCH quicker than the 3GS so adding a dozen albums isn't a pain as it is done in under a minute).

Battery life is the same as my 3GS on 5.0.1 although if I use mobile data (rather than wifi) it drains the battery faster, that is due to the faster mobile data speeds the 4S has compared to the 3GS though).

Camera quality is alright but it can't handle low light very well so the pictures are very noisy.

Video recording is also good in good light environments but it eats through storage so if you fill your iPhone over 85% or so with apps and music, etc. then don't expect to be able to record 10 minutes of 1080p video as you won't have the space [on a 16GB model]

Cell reception is the same as the 3GS.

All in all the upgrades from the 3GS are not all that amazing in my opinion. As the 3GS got iOS 5 it got all of the new features I wanted (iMessage being the main one). With hindsight I probably wouldn't upgrade to the 4S but that is just me personally. I am quite an awkward customer though :) I had a Galaxy Nexus and loved the big screen but hated Android, in the end I decided to make do with the small screen on the iPhone but enjoy using the phone albeit with a smaller screen so reading/watching things on it wasn't as nice as it is on the GN.

If you use your phone a lot for browsing, watching videos, etc. then you might like what the 4S has to offer. I wouldn't upgrade for things like Siri or FaceTime though. Siri you can easily forget that it was ever there and I don't actually know anyone who has ever used FaceTime other than to try it out. If I do video chat I do it on my computer not holding a phone in front of my face.

I upgraded from a 3GS to an iPhone 4S at launch and I thought it was a great upgrade for me. My 3GS's battery was starting to get low too but it wasn't due to the iOS 5 update in my case, it was just the 3GS's battery degrading. Even before I upgraded to iOS 5 it was starting to last less and less each day.

I get a better reception with my iPhone 4S than I did with the 3GS. For the first time I actually get full bars, not that they are needed to make a call of course but it does mean when I was in areas with 1 or no bars with my 3GS I now get 50% on my 4S and am able to use my phone in places where before it was too weak to make calls without them dropping.

The camera is way better I mean it's like night and day especially inside the 3GS was completely unusable inside but the 4S produces quite acceptable pictures inside in my opinion, don't get me wrong they are still grainy but at-least 1/4th as bad as the 3GS was. Taking pictures in low-light with the 3GS was like taking a picture of pure static in comparison.

Performance wise the 4S is really fast I never notice a single slow down at all where as with the 3GS by iOS 4 and 5 I was starting to notice a slowdown, just opening menus in the settings application there is a very noticeable difference.

And of course there is that screen the Retina display is simply stunning. I've seen a lot of displays and the iPhone 4/4S's is the best in my opinion. I can't wait to check out the iPad 3 with a Retina display.

Is the upgrade right for you? Well only you can know that but for me it was a great upgrade. I got my 3GS in 2009 and I skipped the iPhone 4 as I didn't like the antenna issues and I felt it wasn't a big enough leap over the 3GS to warrant the high price premium but when the iPhone 4S came out I really liked it, especially Siri which I use every day, I know a lot of people see Siri as a gimmick but I use it tons for setting alarms, timers and reminders. It's just faster to say it than it is to do those by hand. I don't use it much for dictation or other stuff though.

I think I'll head to a shop and test out the 4 and 4S side by side.

After having my phone annoy me already today it's already made me want to get a new one. as for mention of facetime, This would benefit me as at the moment I use rubbish skype app on my phone to talk to people. the facetime app would be very nice to use instead.

I've also received an email today saying my bank (natwest) is upgrading my ad blue account to a silver account, price increase of ?2 a month making it ?8 a month.

I only use this for phone insurance which i've never had to claim on and to claim it costs ?50 odd anyway.. thinking it might not be worth having anymore... or atleast hunt around for something cheaper. does anyone else bother getting phone insurance if so how much do they pay and who with?

Do like me and wait for the next iPhone.

I also can?t stand my 3GS anymore, but knowing they will add 4G/LTE network, probably upgrade all the components and speed, add NFC payments, and probably 3D maps because they bought a company for this, etc. I, for one, would deeply regret in a few months it if I got a 4S.

For me, the apps I use on the 3GS are the main thing. So as long as the iOS version keeps updating, I see no real need to upgrade as the only 'better' thing that I might find useful is the camera occasionally, rarely the games and the HD video recording is a good bonus.

Of course, it's getting a little slow and the screen isn't as clear but it's doing the job. I will get an iPhone 5 though, I think they'll be enough of a gap to push it through. Hopefully they'll be something that I consider 'major'.... We shall see.

  • 1 month later...

Just to let people know, I upgraded to a iPhone 4 16GB costing ?275 off eBay. phone is perfect not a mark on it.

Sold my iPhone 3GS 16GB for ?142 on eBay so got myself a very cheap upgrade.

iPhone 4 is so much better! it's never slow, camera is much better and I'm always using facetime so I'm saving lots of minutes.

also speaker is much better in it so it's actually getting me up in the mornings with it alarm!!

very happy with it.

You can make it quicker (and the 3GS) by turning off all the spotlight options as well. Settings > General > Spotlight Search
