Zorin Is a Linux OS That Looks and Behaves Like Windows 7 (BAH!)

Recommended Posts

This review was taken from the LifeHacker site. I personally have tried ZorinOS and to be nice about it: It sucked! It's slow and clunky. Feels like your trying to pour molasses through a strainer. Looks are nothing like Windows 7. Just another load of crap. ~ Lo Tec

If you're building a computer for a relative or friend and wish to avoid the cost of Windows 7 you might look into Zorin?the Linux OS' elements such as the taskbar, file system, start menu, and desktop all work just like in Windows. This combined with Zorin having the WINE Windows Emulator preinstalled means that the end user can install Windows programs easily.

I downloaded the ISO (around 1.14GB), burning a DVD of the ISO, and running the OS from my optical drive. The OS performed well, as you'd expect from running it from the disc. Windows emulated worked well, and although the familiar copyrighted logos are missing otherwise it looks and runs just like Windows7 for average computing tasks.

In addition to WINE Zorun also comes with Play-On-Linux, another Windows emulator I'm not very familiar with. The OS also includes lots of standard open-source/freeware apps and there is a Software Center that functions just like the Ubuntu Software Center but with a slightly smaller catalog.

You can also change the look of GUI from the "Look Changer" in the control center to mimic Windows XP, Vista, Mac OS X, or a vanilla Linux GNOME interface. Zorin's Background Plus makes it easy to use a video file or screensaver as your background.

I like that it has the security of Linux built on the extremely likable interface of Windows7. Depending on how well it recognizes your devices. I had no problems running it on my Lenovo laptop, but your mileage may vary.

looks awful and from what i have heard from others does not run any smoother with an install as it does from the live cd.

No it doesn't and it's a bad distro. Everything about it sucks. It was unbearable running it on Live DVD, but that is to be expected on live sometimes, so I installed it and even though it was slightly faster after install, after a few hours I just couldn't take it anymore.

Exactly. LifeHacker usually is a good site for info, but that post is just untrue.....

The only linux distro I've personally tried that looks like windows (xp) and it does, is Red Flag linux, only took about 6 days straight to download it... Wasn't all that worth it.

Apparently lindows (did?) look like windows...

I haven't used Linux for a few years, but isn't that KDE rather than Gnome?

That's definitely KDE in the screenshot.

That screen is actually LXDE. Go figure.

Don't get me started on this one.

Unfortunately this is another example of

"Hey, why not bring a good GUI concept to this system?"

-"Yeah!"

"Don't get too concerned about details and removing redundancies, okay? This is still GNOME/KDE/<insert>"

What a BAD copy.

Don't get me wrong. Copies can be AWESOME - when done RIGHT.

This is so badly copied it leaves every Win 7 GUI fan crying.

I'd much rather take something completely different than a bad copy.

If you want a good "copy" of a major OS GUI (not Win 7 in this case though) take elementary OS for an example! (Y)

You're getting it all wrong. According to some Linux fanboys here it's actually Apple who copied from elementary OS.

Zorin is made from ubuntu. I downloaded it yesterday, the 64 bit version and it crashed every time I tried to install it.

I Goggled about it crashing and found numerous reports of it crashing on installation. The DVD I made is now in the trash.

You didn't make an AOL frisbee from it?

Randomly on the subject GS; do you know of any clients that can send/recieve iMessage messages for mac that isn't the iMessage beta test application?

Nope, and to be honest I wouldn't trust third party solutions with something like this too much... :/
