Mass. school quickly fixes KKK typo on menu

Recommended Posts

METHUEN ? About 6,500 students in four city grammar schools took home new menus yesterday to replace the ones they got on Monday which school officials say listed "KKK Chicken Tenders" by mistake.

The menu was supposed to read "KK Chicken Tenders," short for Krispy, Krunchy, according to Methuen Schools Superintendent Judith Scannell, who called it an unfortunate typo by a longtime, "exemplary employee."

"As she was typing it, she hit a third 'K.' It was an oversight," Scannell said. "I apologize for the School District if we offended anybody. This was cleaned up immediately and a new menu sent out."

At least one, unnamed person who identified herself as the mother of a grammar school child was angry enough to call a Boston television station, which ran with the story on its nightly newscast yesterday.

But Scannell said she never heard from the irate mom or any other parents who were concerned about the mistake.

"Apparently this mom called the food service director and spoke to the office. One parent called the food service director," Scannell said. "Not one single parent had called me, my office or any of my administrators. I checked with my School Committee people and they have not received one call. The School Committee was not aware of any of this. But now, this is totally out of control."

The only people who have been calling Scannell about the menu mistake have been from the media, she said.

Meanwhile, the superintendent said she planned to meet with her staff this morning to see if any additional steps need to be taken to deal with any fallout from the "KKK" reference.

KKK is the common abbreviation for Ku Klux Klan, an infamous century-old white supremacy, terrorist group born out of the American Civil War. It was the group's murderous actions during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s which provokes discussion of a dark side of American history ? and one that Methuen educators or parents may have to address this week if questioned what "KKK" stands for.

"I'm not an educator, but if my son asked me what it meant, I would try to explain it to him," City Councilor Sean Fountain said in an interview last night. "I think it's being blown more out of proportion than what really happened. I really don't think it was intended to be a negative issue or racial issue."

I personally believe that people do stupid things when they have too much time on their hands. That mother needs to reevaluate her schedule and find more fulfilling things to do.

Very true. Unfortunately nowadays people have this mistaken belief that they have some constitutional right not to be offended by anything, and that even innocent mistakes should be punished harshly.

edit: Why in the hell am I not surprised that this happened in Massachusetts, in a town that is only 1.35% African American? Hell, the city I live in is well over 70% African American and I don't think that a damned typo on a lunch menu like this would get even that much attention, especially when it was fixed quickly. And what kind of newspaper feels that they actually have to EXPLAIN what the KKK is? Are people up there THAT out of touch with history? And don't their schools teach anything about the KKK in their history classes? Sounds like a pretty lousy school if the parents are going to have to explain to little Johnny or Jane what the KKK is.

sure beats relaxing and calling the SCHOOL to see if they knew this error has happened. Lets call a television station in hopes of getting your 30 seconds on tv.

I bet none of the student knew what KKK meant! ;)

If they don't, then shame on the school, or whoever writes up their curriculum. At least some mention of the KKK should be made in any history class.

And this is what's wrong with the world today. The Boston television station and the school both should have told the 'irate mother' to find something better to do than worry about a typo. Would the mother have been concerned if the typo had been KKF instead? A typo is a typo.

Now the school has had to pay to reprint 6,500 menus. Money which could have been better spent elsewhere! If I'd have been the principal I think I'd have come out and said "It's a typo. It means nothing. That's the way it is."

As a society we need to learn to grow a backbone and stop apologising for things that need no apology - and shame those that think it does.

Krispy, Krunchy, according to Methuen Schools Superintendent

Crispy, Crunchy. WTF?!?!?

1. Do the people in this school district fail at spelling?

2. Huh, crispy crunchy chicken tenders should be the norm. Chicken tenders don't need to be specified as crispy crunchy, they are understood to be this way. I bet they weren't crispy or crunchy. From my past experiences with school lunches they were probably soggy and moldy.

It is kind of a bizarre typo, and the superintendent probably made up "krispy, krunchy" as a cover up.

Whats the big deal on the spelling? Krispy Kreme doughnuts are spelled the same way.

From reading the posts at the news site, that is actually the brand name of the chicken nuggets.

http://www.krispykrunchy.com/ (be careful with that link, all I got when clicking on it was a blue screen with an annoying song playing, at least in Chrome, works in IE though).

Considering that this isn't a well known brand, perhaps the news site should have pointed that out in the article. I guess they didn't count on people around the world reading the article.

Judging from the demographics for that town listed on Wikipedia (which I linked to above), there's about an 89% chance you are right.
