How to tell if my iPhone 3G is dead or just the battery?

Recommended Posts

My iPhone 3G was plugged in (charging) and just sitting on my table. When I wanted to pick it up to use it, the screen was frozen (Slide to unlock screen). I waited a bit but nothing happened. I tried holding the power button for a while, but that did nothing. So I pressed and held the power button and home button at the same time until it shut off.

The problem is, now I can't turn it back on. I tried connecting it to the computer and to a power outlet but that didn't change anything. It gave no signs of life ...

So my question is: is there a way to tell if the battery simply died or the whole iPhone is bricked?

P.S.

The iPhone was unusually warm/hot when I first picked it up, after the initial charging period ...

First thing I can suggest you when an iPhone becomes really hot : remove the SIM card if you don?t want a surprise bill at the end of the month.

I can?t answer your question unfortunately.

I did. Put it in another phone.

If it doesn't turn on when plugged in then it's dead.

That's what I thought too.

+1, you should still be able to turn it on plugged in if it was just the batt...

Try holding the home & power keys again (even if its hot/switched off).

Did that already to no avail.

Take it to an Apple Store, they will tell you what?s wrong with it.

I might do that, but I did jailbreak it so I'm thinking they won't like that too much :)

Take it to the Apple store or try to boot up to DFU mode(Google and Youtube). DFU Mode boot up does work out most of the time.

Tried DFU already but it didn't do anything.

Hardware issue. Device is dead I'm afraid. Replacing the battery 'might' work if you want to attempt it yourself there are various howto's on Youtube.

You'll have to decide whether it's worth the investment.

Either a faulty battery or the system is in a hard lock. Unfortunately if this happened then with most phones you could safely remove the battery which makes sure the phone is completely off, but you can't do this with an iPhone. :(

Don?t tell them you did. All you want is them to start it up and then you can fly away home with it.

iDevices are strange if they don't have a good battery. Your battery cells could also be shorted, where the phone wouldn't do anything. Usually you always get a battery charging icon on the screen no matter what after at most a minute. this would be the only way I could think that it wouldn't, which would also explain the extremely hot temperature (not good for the PCB)

If your not getting that it could be anything. If USB isn't responding and your DFU mode was fruitless - Its not looking good, unless the battery had a fault. Theres no shorted pins on your connector?
