Why is Mirror and Parity on Storage Spaces so god awful slow?

I am running W8 CP and set up a Parity Storage Space with three 3TB drives. The write speed is HORRIBLE.... I'm getting maybe 15MB/s max. When I set up a 2-way Mirror instead I'm getting 30-40MB/s max.

Normally these drives, when set at standalone, get about 90-100MB/s.

Why so slow? Anyone else seeing this? Is it because it's a software RAID?

Almost useless for me.
