IE10 desktop, 64bits, and the new Enhanced Protected Mode sandbox

Recommended Posts

Not many people seem to be aware of it, but Windows 8 contains lots of security features that are not part of Windows 7.

One of them is a more efficient version of IE7/vista Protected Mode sandbox.

It is called Enhanced Protected Mode, and is enabled by default in IE/metro but not on IE/desktop, because current plugins are not (yet) compatible (however IE can switch individual tabs to regular protected mode to enable use of plugins)

Here is more about it:

Enabling this new sandbox causes IE10 desktop to run its tab renderer processes as 64bits.

However, I didn't find a way to enable 64bit desktop IE without enabling the new sandbox too.

Did someone find something about that?

What about 32bit windows 8? Will IE Metro still be 64bit?

Of course no, 32bit Windows can't run 64bits programs, even with an x64 processor.

I guess on both 32bits x86 and ARM versions of IE, the EPM sandbox will work anyway, but on 32bits process of course.

And for ARM version of Windows 8, I expect both the Metro and the Desktop version of IE10 to have the EPM sandbox enabled by default, since they don't have to maintain compaitiblity with legacy plugins.
