Android reception

Recommended Posts

Ok so I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 that I bought in Australia, I now live in Austria and my girlfriend has a SGS2 also however hers was bought here. We both have the same phone company yet if our phones are close to each other or even if we are in the same room we get vastly different coverage experiences (mine is almost always worse than hers).

I checked the phone company we use (Orange) and apparently it uses bands that my phones support so I ruled that out, I was just thinking could it have to do with rooting and flashing custom roms on my phone?

(my experience here is fairly limited even after doing some reading on it) but is it possible that other than flashing a rom you can flash something (maybe a kernal or something I dont know) which controls the reception?

Because I moved to Austria do I need to change something or flash something on my phone to get it to work with the signal towers better here?

If anyone knows or can point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it, as I have done some reading on XDA developers however I don't really understand most of the FAQ's and nothing really directly talks about reception issues and flashing.

As for as I know, if you flash the kernel version differently than the stock one, you might see the problem in reception, you have to find out the stock kernel for that region (altho most of the time, almost all the kernel's work fine), why don't you try Android 4 Stock, Ice Cream which Samsung start the seeding for European and Taiwanese region.

I've heard of 'updated' SIM cards from carriers that fix reception problems, perhaps by different APN settings or whatever. When I left my HD2 for the G2 I was instructed to only use the new SIM that came with the G2 that was "4G". When I bought the GS2, yet another new SIM rather than packing along the previous one.
