Peyton Manning picks the Broncos

Score one ? a big one ? for John Elway and the Denver Broncos.

Despite not being a favorite at the opening of the Peyton Manning free-agency proceedings, Denver swooped in and stole the future Hall of Famer, as news came Monday that Manning had decided to play for the Broncos and instructed his agent to begin negotations with the team. That news left the Titans, 49ers and others as disappointed bystanders.

Manning?s move from Indianapolis to Denver could make the Broncos the team to beat in the AFC West, assuming Manning returns to full health before the season. His current conditioning level has been one of the ongoing mysteries in this drawn-out situation, with conflicting reports about how far along he is in his rehab, how comfortable he is throwing the football and so on.

Denver, understandably, is willing to take the risk.

A franchise that has been searching for an elite quarterback ever since Elway retired needed Elway himself to seal the Manning deal. Elway and the Broncos brass met with Manning in Durham, N.C., on Friday to discuss Manning?s future.

At the time of that meeting, there was widespread belief that the Tennessee Titans had leapfrogged into the Manning sweepstakes lead, thanks in part to a hefty contract offer.

But the Broncos reportedly matched Tennessee?s bid ? Manning?s deal is expected to be worth $90 million-plus over five seasons, according to a report by Mike Klis of The Denver Post ? giving Elway an opportunity to close. And just as he did so many times throughout his storied career, Elway did just that.

A move to Denver brings with it a host of obstacles for Manning: A shaky receiving corps, difficult weather conditions and a murderous 2012 schedule (including the Texans, Saints, Ravens and Patriots), to name a few.

Still, the Broncos did manage to steal the AFC West and knock off the Steelers in last year?s playoffs, despite their issues.

The biggest of those question marks came at quarterback, where Tim Tebow stepped in and memorably helped turn Denver?s 2011 season around. Tebow even tossed an OT touchdown in that postseason triumph over Pittsburgh and looked set to enter next season as the Broncos? No. 1 QB.

Manning?s arrival obviously changes all of that. Denver now appears set to try to trade Tebow ? if anyone has interest in the flawed, but exciting, quarterback.

Elway backed Tebow late in the year and into the start of this offseason, but even prior to the Manning courtship, the Broncos were in the market for a veteran quarterback to step in and push Tebow during training camp.

Instead, Manning will likely push the popular player out of town.

Where and when to deal Tebow will be Denver?s problem for another day. Right now, the Broncos have every right to celebrate Manning?s arrival, given the unlikelihood that this scenario would play out.

It may take Manning several more months to get into playing shape, and Denver now has to get to work surrounding its new franchise player with more talent, but there?s little question that the Broncos will consider themselves a threat in the AFC.

?Manning Watch? is over. ?Tebow Watch? has just begun. And the AFC West might have just shifted rather decisively in Denver?s favor.

As a Dolphins fan. Actually, as an NFL fan, this is just wrong. I didn't care much for the Broncos before, but now they are definitely on my sh*tlist. From Jay Cutler, to Kyle Orton, now Tim Tebow. They have treated all of their QBs like utter crap, even if they do good. They are among the worst franchises in NFL history in the way they treat players.

On a side note, I really hope Tebow doesn't come anywhere near Miami. Please, no.

Damn it! I wanted him with the 49ers!!

Kind of hard to not fault him for not going with the 49ers. Jim Harbaugh is a prick after all, but out of the teams gunning for him, they have the best chance of repeating or going further than they did last season.

You guys have some serious damage control to do now. 49ers may be the ones this year SoL at the QB position after this fiasco.

To be fair, Cutler, Orton, and Tebow are all poor QBs. Cutler and Tebow can have a few moments of talent at times, but Cutler is still a cry baby, and Tebow still can't throw consistently to save his life.

Granted I do agree that this move is a complete slap in the face to Tebow. You can't expect a guy to become great in one year. Denver is clearly too impatient to grow a team, and would rather try to buy their way to a super bowl. Going the Yankees route I see. :p

And his losing mentality just got the worst of him again. He got a better chance of winning rings with the 49's.

Giants - Denver Superbowl would be pretty damn entertaining though. No doubt.

Cutler is meh, yeah, I do agree. But Orton just needs the right setting I believe. He has had a rough career and hasn't really been dealt a good hand. I think once he does, he will be a good QB.

I hate the Florida Gators with a burning passion, so I have disliked Tebow from day one. I think he is a solid fullback or halfback, but definitely not a quarterback. He can't throw or read defenses at all. Still though, he did get them to the playoffs, so I guess that says something. Problem is with Tebow, is he is a left handed, running quarterback. That is a red flag for nearly every team right now, as most teams build up their left side to accommodate their QB. Tebow is in a bad situation now.... Maybe the Eagles will grab him? :p That is the only team currently fit for his playstyle.

Haha! Yeah, Tebow could be benchwarmer behind Vick. He'd be guaranteed playing time for half the season after Vick gets his yearly beating.

Ain't it the truth! Poor Vick, I like the Eagles, and I like Vick. They could go the double QB route, and have Vick and Tebow swap out. It'll work for one season, as other teams try and figure out WTF to do against them. But just like the 11-5 2009 Dolphins running the Wildcat, teams will and do figure it out by next season, so they would have to make a mad dash for the SB. I could see it happening, especially with Vince Young there to throw the longball.

Sorry Larry, Giants won't see another SB for at least three years. It's a cycle kind of thing, where they play mediocre until the fire's getting hot and they turn things around, playing solid ball straight to the Super Bowl as they've done twice now. If we happen to see a third match between Brady and Manning, I'll be sure to pick the Giants the next go around.

I'll be getting my #18 Broncos jersey

Reports are saying he will be wearing his #16 from when he played for the University of Tennessee ;) Great news for us but I really hope Tebow stays around because he is the future of the team because Manning only has a few good years left in him.

As for Tebow haters, he took us from 1-4 and got us to the Playoffs. Elway, Manning, Big Ben, Rodgers and a few other never did that in their first season as a starter. The kid has talent he just needs time to grow and with Manning as a mentor he will be the next Elway.

What, because he's on the another team it's going to change the fact that he still chokes when it counts? I like Manning, he throws a lot of yards, a lot of touchdowns, but is unreliable when it comes to the big games. With the stats he has, to only have 1 ring says it all. Tebow needs a lot of work, but he's only 24.

I disagree. Sure the TEAM got into the playoffs. He either had a lot of luck or a lot of spirit in the last 2 minutes of the 4th quarter of every game, but you can't keep winning like that. The NFL knows how to stop Tebow, which is to shut down the option. If you stop him from running you make him ineffective. I think he COULD maybe be a decent QB under the tutelage of Elway and Manning, but he's most certainly out of here so.... oh well.

Hell, I'm English and even I saw that move coming. Should make for a pretty interesting season though, and I'm looking forward to it :) Sucks a bit for Tebow, he didn't do half bad in his first year. As for the people saying "everyone knows how to deal with him now", he's still young and can change his game. With Manning to learn from, he'll get a chance to do that.

The thing is no one knows for 100% sure how good Manning is at this point. He hasn't played a down in over a year. He's got the pedigree but he is going to be 36 years old in a few days and his best days are behind him. One solid hit next year may take him out again. No one can say at this point. If it were me, I'd keep Tebow around and let Manning tutor him. Best of both worlds.

One solid hit can take anyone out. People are misunderstanding the reason behind his neck surgery. It was to relieve a pinched nerve. Surgeons across the country have chimed in saying with the routine surgery he had done there is no more risk of getting injured than anyone else. It's just a matter of getting his throwing back to 100%.

Routine surgery? He had four. All the shows I listen to say the opposite. Hell, I was listening to Fox Radio on XM and they had been interviewing doctors who were calling him nuts to try to play again. His vertebrae are fused for crying out loud, to be claiming anything as "low risk" with Peyton Manning is very irresponsible, in my opinion.

Denver better make a push for Mike Wallace because after Demariyus Thomas they have jack at receiver. I guess I just don't understand why he picked Denver. As a Niner fan, I was hoping he would just retire - did not want him in a SF uniform at any point during all of this and I surely don't want to see him laying on the field, crippled.

but whats everyone gonna do now with their Tebow jerseies ?

i am the only one that finds it really funny that Tebow has to be a backup QB now

He was a backup as a freshman in college, he was a backup as a rookie in the NFL. Not sure what's funny about him being a backup?

Routine was an admiditly poor word choice.

Well, those doctors vs. other doctors, who knows. Definitely conflicting information. I just know, I've got a wife and kid and wouldn't jack around with my safety in this scenario if I thought there was an risk. He's a smart guy, I trust he knows what he's doing.
