God of War could be headed to Vita, mobile platforms

Santa Monica developer says "we have to look at all opportunities";

Ready at Dawn developer says idea to have them make such a game was floated, but didn't come together.

Sony is considering bringing God of War to the PlayStation Vita and other mobile platforms.

In an interview with IGN, Sony Santa Monica senior director of product development Shannon Studstill said a PS Vita adventure for Kratos developed by Ready at Dawn (the studio behind God of War: Chains of Olympus and God of War: Ghost of Sparta on the PSP), was "on the table." However, in a separate interview published today by Games Industry International, Ready at Dawn CEO Ru Weerasuriya said the idea was considered and dropped, explaining, "it just didn't align with what we wanted."

The PS Vita isn't the only platform that could potentially play host to Kratos. Studstill said Sony must also consider bringing its ashen Spartan (not to mention its other flagship franchises) to a wealth of emerging platforms.

"I think with the way the industry's playing that dysfunctional passive aggressive type of mentality, we as a company and we as an industry constantly have to look at all opportunities," Studstill said. "It doesn't mean we'll go there, but there's certainly reason to talk about it."

The God of War franchise's last outing beyond Sony systems was in 2007 with the mobile game God of War: Betrayal. The series' most recent new installment was 2010's Ghost of Sparta, though a PlayStation 3 HD compilation of the two PSP games was released last year. Rumors of the next God of War game have been swirling since a Sony Santa Monica job listing sought a multiplayer specialist to join the God of War team last year.

We better see a new PS3 version come out before they start working on anything for the mobile front. I won't deny that I'd love to have one to play on the Vita and have been thinking about purchasing the first 2 PSP ones just so I can play them on the go (already own the HD remakes on PS3). Not sure how enjoyable this would be outside of a dedicated handheld, though I suppose they could always dumb it down for a more casual audience.

Would be nice to see a GOW on the Vita. The Ghosts of Sparta and Chains of Olympus on the PSP were well received (86 and 91 on metacritic respectively), so I certainly think it could work.

God of War on any platform has always been a "no compromises" game -- even Betrayal went all out to offer the most authentic GoW experience it could - and most reviewers have pegged it as a very good mobile game (albeit limited because, well, it's a feature phone game). I don't see why GoW for Android would be a dumbed down experience, lord knows if they can do it on the PSP they can do it on a mobile phone.
