Police say guns found on man at Sacramento airport

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ? Authorities say a Montana man tried to bring four loaded, semi-automatic handguns past a security checkpoint at Sacramento International Airport and was being held without bail Friday.

Harold Waller, 45, was arrested Thursday afternoon after Transportation Security Administration officials found a gun in one of his carry-on bags, said Sacramento County Sheriff's Deputy Jason Ramos.

When TSA screeners conducted a more thorough check, they found Waller was carrying a loaded gun, and had two other semi-automatic weapons packed in his carry-on bags, Ramos said.

After Waller was arrested, deputies searched his car and said they found eight more guns, some of which were loaded.

Those guns were a combination of handguns and what he described as "long guns."

Ramos said a "significant amount" of ammunition was found in the car as well.

Waller, from Circle, Mont., was trying to board a US Airways flight to Phoenix.

He was booked on suspicion of unlawful possession of a loaded firearm, unlawful possession of a concealed firearm, possession of an unauthorized weapon in a public building and possession of a firearm within a sterile area of an airport, Ramos said.

Ramos said he could not say if Waller made any statements during or after his arrest. It was not clear whether Waller had retained an attorney.

Wait. they only found the gun on him because they saw the one in his carry on? What the hell.

They would have shown up in the metal detector. I've taken firearms on planes before, and it's too easy to get them through and stay within the guidelines in place. Place them in a locked, hard case, with the ammunition in an actual container designed to hold it (like the original box), and place it in one of your checked bags, declare it when you check in and they'll look at it, tag the bag, and off you go.

his bag probably already came through and he hadn't walked through yet, so they wouldn't know it was guns on him until they checked him.

Did you carry the gun in your checked in bags or your carry on?

Checked bags. Every time I've ever flown I just declared it at the front desk, went off to the side with a TSA guy and he had me open the box, show him that it is unloaded and secured, then they placed a little form inside the box and closed my bags and took them for me to put with the rest of my checked baggage.

Edit: That is one bag I hope they never lose in transit, lol. They can have my PS3, my underwear, and everything else, but that's a legal mess I'd hate to clean up if I was the TSA and I lost somebody's firearm.

Depends on how vigilant the TSA guys are tbh. I was at Salt Lake City airport 4 days ago waiting for my connecting flight to board and the guy who was sitting in the seat opposite to me had a switch blade.

You would expect that to show up on the metal detector / millimeter wave scanners but he got it through just fine...

I do the same since states I visit have concealed carry permit reciprocity - they honor Michigan's and vice versa. As for losses: travel & loss insurance and 2 weapons in different bags. OTOH they go nuts over my cane :p
