Since I switched to android, I get texts from each person but it isn't under one common thread. My friends with droids running the same version if android have no trouble. But they're alot of sms/messenger applications you can get that will allow you to do this, aslong as everybody else has the same app too. Text+ is quite efficient. Or take a look on the market itself and see which you prefer, https://play.google.com/store/search?q=group+sms&c=apps I'm not interested in modding my phone, so they could possibly be a way around this by doing that.
