A hapless cat burglar fled leaving 20,000 GBP in cash behind him after he was battered by a pensioner walking his dog.

The crook had climbed six stories at an apartment block in the Chinese capital, Beijing, to break into a flat where he bundles of local currency stashed under a bed.

After wrapping the cash in sheets, the crook climbed down only to be challenged by retired security guard Li Wen.

"I had a big walking stick with me and I knew what he'd been up to so I smashed his feet as soon as he landed," explained Li.

"He tried to grab the money so I hit him again, harder this time and he howled and ran away," he added.
