3DS outselling Sony in Japan, 65% marketshare

The latest figures from Japan's Media Create are in, showing that last year's trend has been fully reversed. Now the consumers are hungry for Nintendo's 3DS, given that it shipped 121,921 units in the week ending April 1st. That put it comfortably ahead of the PlayStation 3 (23,771), PSP (18,356) and PS Vita's (12,105) sales combined. The stats reveal that the 3DS is now accounting for 65 percent of all hardware sales in the country, a marked turnaround from when the console's future looked gloomy. Meanwhile, the biggest selling game was Kingdom Hearts 3D for Nintendo's newest handheld, which managed to shift over 200,000 units in just seven days.

Here's the full hardware chart for the same week. The previous week's sales are in parentheses.

  • 1. 3DS: 121,921 (94,011)
  • 2. PS3: 23,771 (25,750)
  • 3. PSP: 18,356 (19,875)
  • 4. PSV: 12,105 (10,302)

Clearly this must mean that it's sony who has become "doomed" now. Poor sony. They should just give up making games and hardware and now just make clones of various phone game trash. etc. etc.

Really though. It's not too surprising. The 3ds has been on top in japan pretty much all of the time lately. And worldwide the vita's sales have been pretty lackluster compared to what the 3ds did, even with the less than amazing launch (and early game) lineup the 3ds had.

The 3DS had a pretty weak start but has pretty much redeemed itself with the current and upcoming games lineup. I think it's also capable of more than what people initially thought, when you look at games like RE: Revelations and Kid Icarus Uprising. The new Kingdom Hearts game looks promising too.

Sony had a rough Vita launch, there was software issues (fix was pushed out quickly) and initial price was too high / selling low, so they have the Vita price the SAME as the 3DS price in Japan.

Nintendo 3DS was a bit rockey at first, however Nintendo quickly got it back on it's feet.

Worth noting that it was released on March 29, so it was released only for 4 of those 7 days.
