Police believe that five separate shootings in north Tulsa, Okla. early Friday morning are connected -- and the fact that all five victims are black has local community leaders on edge.According to The Associated Press, the shootings took place between 1:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m., in a three-mile area of north Tulsa. Three of the victims were shot dead and two are in critical condition. Police don't believe that the victims knew each other, but are treating the crimes as linked because the shootings took place so close together, and because the victims were all out walking at the time they were shot. Those killed were identified Friday as Dannaer Fields, 49, Bobby Clark, 54, William Allen, 31. The other two victims are in the hospital in critical condition, and have not been identified. Homicide detective Sgt. Dave Walker said that residents interviewed in the area of the shootings say a white man driving a white pickup truck may have been involved. The detective told the Tulsa World that residents can expect increased patrols in the neighborhoods where the shootings occurred and across the city. The NAACP called an emergency meeting in a north Tulsa church Friday evening to discuss what they fear may be a racially motivated shooting spree. "Word on the street is that this person would drive up to people walking, ask for directions, and when they would turn away, walk away, began firing," Tulsa City Councilor Jack Henderson told KRMG News after the NAACP meeting concluded. "That's truly a concern, and anybody would be [ill] at ease if you knew this was going on." "If you systematically target black folks and that's all you shot, and you come to the north side of town and you're a white male, and we know he was a white male, then what is one left to believe?" Rev. Warren Blakney, president of the Tulsa NAACP, told local NBC affiliate KJRH-TV. Police are calling the shootings an "unprecedented" incident. Simmonds, an FBI spokesman for the state of Oklahoma, said at this point agents are in the initial stages of trying to determine whether any sort of federal law was violated. NAACP Tulsa president the Rev. Warren Blakney Sr. and Tulsa City Councilor Jack Henderson indicated at a Friday night event at the North Peoria Church of Christ, 2217 N. Peoria Ave., that it appeared to them the shootings, which were evidently committed by a white man, appeared to be hate crimes. When asked if he believed the shootings were racially motivated, Blakney said that when there are reports that someone "systematically shot black folk, what is one left to believe?" Federal hate crime laws apply in situations in which people are attacked because of their race, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender or gender identity. For any human being to do this to other people they must be stark raving mad. Something has gone dramatically wrong with that persons perceptions. England's father was murdered by a black guy, then his fiance' committed suicide in front of him and their 6 month old child - so this was some kind of revenge deal. Jeeezzzz.... The problem is that a CNN report directly quoted England's Facebook page where a racial epithet and the f-word were used. Since 1990 the US gun related and violent crime rates have fallen precipitously, even though the number of guns have skyrocketed. I know - facts are soooo.... inconvenient. The n-word is far more politically charged in the US than outsiders may realize - even though in private mixed-race social circles it may be used casually. Most people don't realize the subtle difference that those social circles don't use the "er" ending version, they use the "a" version. Since 1990 the US gun related and violent crime rates have fallen precipitously, even though the number of guns have skyrocketed. I know - facts are soooo.... inconvenient. While I am sure more people own guns, I think the skyrocketing of sales is not from that, but from people owning numerous guns. A retired guy I know that is about 60 owns 8 rifles and 3 pistols. He is an avid hunter and uses the rifles for different prey. I think someone who buys one gun is more likely to by a second/third, like tattoos, piercings, electronic gadgets, etc. Just another hobby. They're proving my point...the difference between 2003 and 2012 is smaller than the margin of error, and one could argue that the 2012 numbers seem too high compared to previous years. And did you look at my first link? U.S. states with the lowest gun/household rates also have the lowest gun crime/person rates. The main point of pro-gun advocates is that criminals will always get guns. That is mostly true. What is wrong is the logic used: it assumes that every murderer was a criminal before, which is completely wrong. Most people involved in shootings are not hardened criminals but rather people who killed because they had the option to do so, such as George Zimmerman. @ILikeTobacco: Indeed. Which is why the gun/household number should be used when looking at murder rates per gun rate, not the gun/person one which makes no sense. DocM Posted April 9, 2012 Share Posted April 9, 2012 Since the chart was so wrong (and not just using the Gallup numbers) why should the admittedly anti-gun blurb be believed? As for the margin for error - those Gallup numbers for ownership are in the middle range of recent surveys, not the top. It's the low 30-something percent figure you posted that is the biggest flyer vs. reality. Also - move ahead to 2005 and the 2011 number is comfortably outside the 4% margin, but of course that wouldn't fit your narrative - would it?.
