wordpress.com vs. wordpress.org for SEO

Question

I have been working on a wordpress.com site for awhile now and I understand that you are quite limited as to what you can accomplish in the way of editing and SEO.

What would be the benefits of moving the site to my own domain instead of having the free wordpress?

My main goal is to promote the site and get more exposure.

Thanks

Never used wordpress myself, always stuck to Blogger as its Googles and does do well in Google Search.

If you hosted the wordpress blog yourself then that will give you more freedom to edit the template? im not sure how much freedom they give you to edit the template? adding in keywords etc etc?

I was just wondering if I'd get more bang for my buck if I had full contol over my wordpress site/template.

Is it really worth it or is the free Wordpress good enough? I don't want to tell my client to upgrade if there is no need to.

I am assuming that the free Wordpress verion already does a good job of SEO.
