I'm always ready to hit the mute button ASAP! But it definitely feels strange without it XD
AngelGraves13
Wasn't it removed to make boot-up faster?

deleted_acc
well, it is a mobile OS in big part... who wants startup sound on their tablet or laptop? don't think there will be on default setting...
Noxa12
Can't say it would be something that would go a great miss whether it was in or not tbh.
cork1958
Wasn't it removed to make boot-up faster? Don't know about that, but one of the first things I've ALWAYS disabled almost instantly on any Windows install along with the login & log off and any of those stupid windows sounds like that. Never have figured out why it was there to begin with. I mean, like WTF do I need a sound for that for? I KNOW I'm starting the dang machine!! firey
I like the sound, that way I can be in another room and know when the computer is ready for me to login. Instead of sitting infront of the machine waiting. MarkusDarkus 1 Share
Calum Veteran Posted April 9, 2012 Veteran Share Posted April 9, 2012 The betta fish is shown during startup in the Consumer Preview, and it's likely that will change to something else by the final build. It's possible that both a start-up animation and sound will arrive.

Maybe due to how fast Windows 8 boots on modern hardware, this requirement will be obsolete :p

LittleNeutrino Veteran Posted April 9, 2012 Veteran Share Posted April 9, 2012 Still a Beta Windows 7 did not have all of its new sounds until the RC was released.
DKAngel
eh my speakers are off as it is and windows 7 startup sound goes for like 1.3seconds so does it really need one? if u want it that baddly grab windows 95's startup sound as it was long
Calum Veteran Posted April 9, 2012 Veteran Share Posted April 9, 2012 Not everyone has modern hardware now do they? Of course not, but I was talking about running Windows 8 on modern hardware. There could be an animation and sound if needed, but not one if not needed.

George P Global Moderator Posted April 9, 2012 Global Moderator Share Posted April 9, 2012 Honestly I think that because MS is trying to make it boot and turn on so fast that needing the old boot/startup sound isn't the case anymore. I guess they could do a simple one note sound like some devices do that i've noticed from time to time.
MS Bob 11
The startup sound is disabled by default and logon, logoff and shutdown sounds have been REMOVED. :( Although in Windows 7 and later, you can hit the Mute key on your keyboard to mute the system even before it logs in. McKay
I get the Windows 7 jingle when I hit the login screen, beyond that it makes no noise.
LightShadow
Likely to come in the future. I mean the system still has the Aero sounds from Vista, hopefully we'll get new sounds for everything in the RC.
Dot Matrix
No biggie. Are startup sounds even *that* important? Sure it's nice to have a little jingle to tell you your computer is up, but most of the time, I have them disabled because of having my laptops at school. My desktop rarely gets shut down to even play the sounds.
FMH
Since it is a 'Windows re-imagined', I was expecting that. And frankly, I find that sound annoying.
McKay
I think it's about time Microsoft introduced a new sound scheme, they've used the one from Vista for 2 generations now.
