Sony to cut 10,000 jobs and slash bonuses, says Japanese newspaper

There have been some major adjustments at Sony HQ already, but Japanese business sheet Nikkei reckons they're nothing compared to what's on the horizon. It reports that, come an announcement on April 12th, Kaz Hirai will reveal plans to clear out 10,000 jobs by the end of this year -- that's six percent of his workforce. The paper also says that seven execs, including chairman Howard Stringer, could be asked to forgo their bonuses, as the company concedes a $3.2 billion loss for 2011. It's a just a single report and it's entirely possible that none of this will happen, but merely the hint of such austerity could perhaps serve Hirai's interests, even if he ends up being less drastic when Thursday comes around.

Actually it's more down to the fact that television sales for Sony have gone down.

When you make crap products (esp. TVs) and provide equally ****ty service, loss is inevitable. Not to mention the millions poured by Sony in researching useless DRM mechanisms which were quickly broken.

I don't know of the quality of Sony TV's in India, but their products are still regarded as one of the best, in Europe.

$3.2 billion loss, jesus.. I heard about Sony losing out but i had no idea it was that high.

Edit - Turns out it's around $1.1 billion loss for poor TV sales.

Their NX and HX series, yeah they're great, their regular EX series though, not so much, the etter models are about the same as a mid range Samsung. And let's be honest, despit their lock fans samsung tv's are not great, exept the 8000 series.

They cost about the same as an equal quality Samsung, except Sony doesn't add those horrible upscale cartoon outline to everything like Samsung.

I've never once actually rated a tv, if it plays the video and chucks out a decent sound then win win. What exactly was the downfall of these poor manufactured tv's?

I have KDL46EX710 since a year in India. I also had a 32" Sony LCD TV back in UK. Both models display/displayed horrible color hue difference while watching EPL on ESPN HD and Sky Sports HD. Left part of the screen, the grass is bright green, and begins to change color to olive green towards right. If I try to watch any movie while turning lights off at night, there is plenty of light bleeding from corners.

So my next purchase will be Samsung or LG for obvious reasons. I remember our first Sony Color CRT TV purchased back in 1990. It served us till 2002 without ANY repairs (Trinitron branding). That was what we knew Sony for.

It's simple mantra. Provide good products and increase business. Sony does opposite.

Sony products may be good, especially the TV's, but not good enough to justify the extortionate prices they demanded. Samsung make TV's just as well and for much cheaper.

If you buy a samsung in the same price class as that ex model. You will have the same, or even worse problems with colors and bleeding, samsung is pretty bad at the light bleeding and ghosting.

Check out the NX models, or even the HX models. LG makes great quality for low prices. BUT they have bigger failure rates and non existent support. Something must be sacrificed for those low prices you know.

I've got a 50" LG 3D plasma, best TV I've ever owned, with the exception of games leaving a burn-in if I leave the UI on too long, but I just turn it off after a while. Before that, I had a 46" SHARP Aquos, 2nd best TV I've ever owned.
