Girls in USA more likely to text while driving

Recommended Posts

WASHINGTON -- Girls in the United States are more likely than boys to text behind the wheel, despite widespread youth awareness of the perils of distracted driving, a nationwide survey suggests.

Fully two-thirds of the 2,012 young drivers aged 15 to 21 who took part in the online survey rated themselves to be "very safe" drivers, with almost every one else describing themselves as somewhat safe.

But a large number acknowledged that they engaged in distracted driving anyway -- from changing music on the car stereo, to eating and drinking non-alcoholic beverages.

Thirty-eight percent of girls said they had read texts while driving, and 27 percent said they had written text message behind the wheel as well.

For boys, the figures were 17 percent and 11 percent respectively.

"We need to reinforce the idea that it takes only one time -- one sip of coffee, one change of the radio station, one glimpse at the cellphone -- to cause or be involved in a crash," said Angela Patterson, who oversees a teen driving safety program for tire maker Bridgestone, which funded the survey.

And it takes:

- one glance at the speedo or any part of the dash.

- a glance around.

- scratching any part of your body

- adjusting your seat belt

- adjusting yourself in the seat

to cause a crash. :/

As if women don't already have bad driving skills coded in their DNA. Texting can only make this worse. I see people do it all the time when I am stopped at a stop sign or red light.

And it takes:

- one glance at the speedo or any part of the dash. (can be done without taking eyes off road)

- a glance around. (part of driving, paying attention to everything around you, not your phone in your hand)

- scratching any part of your body (can be done without taking eyes off road)

- adjusting your seat belt (can be done without taking eyes off road)

- adjusting yourself in the seat (can be done without taking eyes off road)

I can already see it at the next Apple Keynote :

"Since Siri has been released, car accidents involving using your cellphone for texting, changing your music or calling, has dropped 30%. We?re very proud of that."

Seriously, I wasn?t using vocal commands before last month, which was the day I got a car, and since then, I?m always using them. Can?t text anybody though, because my vocal commands are set in English and I text in French. But it?s very practical for changing my music (album and artist names are in English, that?s why I chose this language), and calling people.

File this under "needless research with obvious results"

Girls 15-21 (at the least) are the most verbal creatures ever to evolve from the primordial slime, so what gave them even a shadow of a doubt that they'd also be the major texters in any environment?

Duh!

Yet, teenage guys pay more on insurance, because we are more likely to get in an accident. Even though most recent research says the opposite.

Males pay more for that 6 inch appendage in between our legs.

I see women where I live texting, chatting and looking at their cell phones whilst driving.

Out of every 100 cars that pass me each morning (around 1,000 do) 25 women and 15 men will be using their cell phone.

23 men and 35 women will be smoking.

17 women and 20 men will not have a seat belt on.

Women are most likely from my observations to drive off without a seat belt and whilst in motion try putting it on.

We also have a problem with loose animals in cars, mainly dogs and 2 women and 2 men drivers will have a loose dog.

In the UK it has been illegal since 2003 to use a cell phone whilst in control of a moving vehicle, but, it still has yet to get into their thick heads.

Where I live 50% if drivers should be banned from using a motor vehicle.
