A black cat was rescued from a Gothic horror death at the weekend – but only after its German owners realized that the eerie meows giving them nightmares were coming from the bathroom wall, not a phantom feline.

After construction work on their bathroom, the owners spent four days puzzling over two mysteries – 1) where had one of their three cats got to? 2) Where was that weird clawing sound and faint meowing coming from?

After much scratching of heads, they decided to call the police in their small town of Clausthal-Zellerfeld, near Göttingen, who referred them to the fire rescue service.

"We didn't believe it at first and had a team of five search the entire house," fire chief Thomas Bremer told the local Goslarsche Zeitung newspaper. "You don't really want to destroy a brand new bathroom unless you have to."

It was only with the help of a camera endoscope, borrowed from a local plumber, that the firemen established that the cat was indeed behind the bathroom wall. "We could see the cat's eyes lighting up in the dark," said Bremer.

It was then that heavy machinery was called in, and after three hours' work ripping out the newly-installed shower cubicle and carefully prising open the wall, the exhausted animal was free again. It has since applied for some more intelligent owners.

I shut my cat up a few times over night between the storm door and larger front door, he just is solid black and can't see him at night.... so he just lays there till we open the door and he falls out all happy to be free once again. You really have to watch cats, they can go into the strangest places to be curious while causing many many problems.

One of the only times I agree with anything you say  It's amazing the spaces cats manage to fit themselves into.

So the cat never made a sound, while work was going on, and only wanted out, after it was sealed in ... ?

My older cat was forever getting locked in to other peoples sheds because of her curiocity.
