IOWA CITY, IA. ? An Illinois family spent part of Mother?s Day in the Johnson County Jail after a bar brawl early Sunday morning.

According to criminal complaints, Iowa City police officers were called to Donnelly?s Pub at 1:22 a.m. on a report of a fight. When officers arrived at the scene, they observed 21-year-old Matthew S. Ward, of Winfield, Ill., shoving several subjects inside the bar. Police said Ward attempted to shove an officer out of the way when he tried to intervene.

Ward was ?violently resistive? and had to be taken to the ground in order to be subdued, police said. He smelled strongly of alcohol and showed other signs of intoxication, police said. Ward was also ?unwilling or unable? to comply with officers and refused a breath test. He was arrested and faces charges of public intoxication and disorderly conduct.

Police said Ward?s father, Scott J. Ward, 52, was also taken into custody. Police said that when they broke up the fight, the elder Ward was told to stay out of the way. However, police said he yelled, ?That?s my son,? and pushed officers while they were arresting Matthew Ward.

Police said Scott Ward refused to comply with officers? commands and would not stop resisting arrest. He, too, smelled strongly of alcohol and showed other signs of intoxication, according to reports.

Bar staff also told officers Scott Ward punched them. He was arrested and faces charges of public intoxication, disorderly conduct and interference with official acts.

As all of this was going on, the matriarch of the Ward family, Jeanne Ward, inserted herself into the situation by yelling at an arresting officer. Jeanne Ward, 51, was told multiple times to step away or face arrest.

Police said after ?at least? five to 10 verbal warnings, Ward refused to step away and stop yelling at the officer. Jeanne Ward joined her husband and son at the Johnson County Jail on a single count of interference with official acts.

Reached at their residence on Monday, Jeanne Ward said the family had no comment on the allegations.
