C# transitioning to Java

Question

Hello everyone. I'm pretty proficient in C# and I'd now like to transition to java. I barrowed many books from a friend that I'm going to start tackling this weekend. I've already done a little research so here are my questions. Are there different versions of java? I see java netbeans and java EE2 or something like that, is that like WinForms and WPF? For andriod progamming is there like an API for java to program for andriod phones or can java be compiled and used in andriod phones as is? Can you get a custom compiler for visual studio or do you have to use Eclipse?

If you want to develop for Android you can use Visual Studio C# with mono. I highly recommend you use it since in my opinion developing with eclipse is the worst experience ever. http://xamarin.com/monoforandroid

If you are used to Visual Studio you will be pulling your hair and eyes out while usign eclipse.

something that is completely stopping more and more developers from getting on android.....

that being said, there is a trial version that you can directly "rip" the APK out right?

What? Rip APK out of where. Mono for Android is for Windows and Mac

mono uses a emulator to show you how your program would act on a android terminal. and guess what it loads on that emulator.

Wait for it.......Just wait.

A.................P..................K

Yeah why don't we pirate Mono while we're at it. You really think they haven't though of that? Mono installs a shared runtime (mandatory for evaluation mode) on the emulator.

I am not sure why people rip on Eclipse, which is a good IDE (I prefer Netbeans but that's just me). It's not Eclipse that makes Android development so painful it's the addin for Eclipse. If Google could get their arse in gear and get a good IDE addin where it doesn't take six hours just to launch the vm and a handy visual editor for screen design then life would be so much easier.

That's what I meant, sorry :p But still, you have to admit that Visual Studio is light years ahead of Eclipse.

It sure is and it's one of the first things I install but 2010 started to get a bit fat for me. :)

    • Same, price was right for my Home, laptop, phone. Works great!
    • Brave and Firefox. I’ve been using them as my primary browsers for a while now, perfect combo
    • They want Ring 0 access. Should be a hard no. A middle ground needs to be found.
    • WFP can be a bit buggy. I switched to the new SocketFilter when 7.22.7 came out. I haven't had any issues so far.
