Swiss police trying to trace the owners of dozens of stolen mobile phones discovered in a raid may have bitten off more than they can chew - thanks to the country's notoriously strict privacy laws.

After studying hundreds of images in the cameras' memories police in Uzwil have decided the only one they can publish in a witness appeal is of a cake.

Lawyers had advised them that showing any images of people would have been a breach of their privacy rights, even though it would have been more likely to trace the phones' true owners.

The phones were discovered in a railway left luggage locker that police had been watching as part of another investigation.

Police spokesman Hans Peter Eugster said: "This is the first time we have taken a picture of a mobile phone and used it to try and identify the owner. Stolen telephones aren't often returned to the original owners here."
