Dog Left Outside Abandoned Home

HIXSON -- One woman has spent the last week pleading for help after she says a dog was chained up outside an abandoned home, fighting for it's life. :cry:

"To know somebody could come up here and drop a dog to leave it to die, don't come back and check on it, it's just awful," says Angie Colt.

Colt fights back tears, explaining what she and her mom saw every day when they looked out their front window. A dog was left in a Hixson yard, chained up, hurt, and so hungry, you could see it's ribs. She knew the Pitbull needed help, so she called animal control.

"He had to come down here to get some water for the dog. And then told us that it was a Pitbull and it looked like it was in distress," says Croft.

Colt says her mother called her crying after she noticed a dog in the front of the home last weekend. She says she knew something wasn't right, since no one had lived in the home for years.

"Probably somebody knew the place was abandoned just decided that it's a good place to tie up a dog and just leave them," says Croft.

"This is not common. The thing is unfortunately in this state, animals are considered property so we have to go through the due process and give people opportunity to claim the animal," says Guy Bilyeu, Executive Director for the Humane Educational Society.

Something Colt says should have been taken care of long ago.

"It's so heartless and cruel that someone would do that to a dog. There's no way I could, I have a little bitty Maltese dog and I panic every time it gets out of the house and I can't find it," says Croft.

Workers with the Humane Society, like Guy Bilyeu, can't find this dogs owner, and can't make sense of such cruelty.

"There's no reason for that. Why would you leave any living being out there not to be able to care for itself? We have a humane society, we have places where you can take animals where they are safe," says Bilyeu.

Bilyeu says as of Sunday, the 48 hour notice has expired and no one has stepped up to claim the dog. He says they planned to rescue the dog Sunday to try and get it healthy so it can be adopted.

What? If I saw a dog abandoned outside my front window, it wouldn't be "days" before I did something. Maybe you guys in the states do things a little different... :huh: :/

I could not just watch an animal suffer.

So she just watched it suffer and waited for outside help to come? Then they have to wait 48 hours before they can take it?

What the hell is wrong with these stupid people?
