Hotmail rebranding to Newmail

Recommended Posts

Yesterday we gave you a sneak peek of the new Hotmail, featuring an entirely new interface that is said to be ?fast, fluid, and intuitive?, and of course the design has been changed to the all new Metro-style, consistent with Microsoft?s other properties like Microsoft account and your Profile page. Well, today we have the full suite of high-resolution screenshots of the new Hotmail, or ?Newmail? as they call it, available for you.

We understand that ?Newmail? will be available on an opt-in basis (at least for the beginning), so users who prefers the old Hotmail experience can continue to use it for a while. For those who do choose to upgrade however, below are what?s new about the service, according to the introductory email for ?Newmail? (and we think it might be there as a placeholder):

  • A modern interface: faster and cleaner

The simple, fluid and interactive design of Newmail makes it easy to use whether you?re on a desktop, phone or tablet.

  • Get a Newmail email address for your new inbox

You get a new email address from Newmail. You don?t have to worry about your contacts and previous emails, you?ll keep them. And, you?ll continue receiving messages sent to your current email address.

  • Bring your inbox to life ? Connect Facebook

Connect and chat across services like Facebook and Twitter. Keep your contacts information automatically in sync, and see what your friends are up to, right from Newmail.

tl;dr - Hotmail rebranding to Newmail, opt-in new UI.

What a completely stupid name change...

Agreed, but it is mentioned that they think it's a placeholder.

I strongly dislike the Hotmail brand, so anything must be better. Although I agree it's quite odd to change the name of something so old and established. I guess we'll find out soon enough!

It's a code name and certainly won't be the new name.

My guess would be 'Microsoft Mail' as name for the final product.

It's stupid to change the name, period. It's been Hotmail for years. People know it, why screw with it?

That's the problem people know the name hotmail. whenever I think hotmail I think of all the calls I get from people who have their accounts hacked. now to be fair they probably clicked on spam or had a really stupid dictionary password but still. Hotmail gives me the same feeling as the name yahoo mail.

Seems a silly move if true because Hotmail is one of Microsoft best known brands. The Windows Live team (or whatever they're calling themselves this year) seem to make one branding mistake after another.

I thought hotmail rebranding was called live mail or something?

It's current name is Windows Live Hotmail. Windows Live Mail is a crappy desktop app, MS made to replace Outlook Express and Windows Mail
