patseguin Global Moderator Posted June 10, 2012 Global Moderator Share Posted June 10, 2012 How do you auto start a program in Windows 8? It's not as easy as putting the program in the startup folder in the start menu anymore and I can't figure it out. I want my livingroom PC to autostart XBMC when it boots. azspeedbullet
try putting the exe file here: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp
Brandon Live Veteran Posted June 10, 2012 Veteran Share Posted June 10, 2012 That would affect all user accounts. For something like XMBC you probably just want it for one, in which case it would go under c:\users\<user name>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup However I'm a little surprised that XMBC doesn't just have an option which will set it up for you. articuno1au
Or boot up regedit, navigate to either: For All Users: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run For The Current User: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run Right click and add a new string value. Assign it whatever name you want. In the data field, copy the location of the executable you want to start
HeXetic
shell:startup will take you to the start-up folder as well. It's a little easier to remember.
Eric Veteran Posted June 10, 2012 Veteran Share Posted June 10, 2012 shell:startup will take you to the start-up folder as well. It's a little easier to remember. That's awesome. Where did you find that? (I see shell:programs takes you to the program files folder as well.)
MS Bob 11
That's awesome. Where did you find that? (I see shell:programs takes you to the program files folder as well.) The shell protocol has been there since Windows 2000. :)
