New PlayStation 3 super slim? "Never say never," says Sony

Will Sony launch a new super slim PlayStation 3?

"Never say never," Sony has teased.

Sony rebranded the PlayStation 3 in August 2009, when it

announced the release of the new PS3 Slim at German trade show Gamescom. It is 32 per cent smaller, 36 per cent lighter and consumes 34 per cent less power that the previous model.

But that was nearly three years ago. With the PlayStation 3 now in its sixth year of life, and reports indicating the PlayStation 4 will launch late next year, there are rumblings that Sony may, yet again, revise the PS3 hardware with an even slimmer and cheaper model to take advantage of late adopters. Gamescom is, after all, right around the corner.

When Eurogamer put this to Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida at E3, this was his response:

"We haven't announced anything new on PS3 in terms of hardware revisions. We should never say never - hardware guys are always looking at ways to make things cheaper, smaller."

But is it something Sony is interested in doing?

"I don't know if we are going to talk about anything like that. We are quite happy with the PS3."

It was a similarly evasive response to our question about motion controller PS Move. Will the hardware ever be improved?

"It's very difficult to answer your questions," Yoshida replied. "We are not talking about any hardware revisions. We are very happy with what we have with PS3, PS Move. If anything, we haven't been able to really fully make use of the potential of PS Move. We are still finding new ways to use PS Move on PS3, and we continue to search for applications."

Before Sony settled on its PS Move design, it explored a Microsoft Kinect style tech that involved controller free motion gaming.

As revealed by Eurogamer in 2010, Sony turned it down because of resolution and accuracy concerns.

"When we were developing PS Move, we looked at every other sensor technology," Yoshida revealed. "As I understand, Kinect is a combination of hardware solution and Microsoft internal software solution. So it's not like we looked at Microsoft's internal software!

"So when, during the course of introducing and launching PS Move, we could have, might have, spoken about - we looked at the Kinect technology. We were talking about the hardware sensor technology, and that was not something we thought we wanted for PS3.

Will Sony look at that technology again?

"Well, these technologies continue to evolve, so our hardware guys are always searching for and talking to different tech providers, so never say never."

Am I the only one here that doesn't see the point to having an even slimmer console? It's not like a portable thing anyway. Just connect it and leave it where it is.

Also just to say that the EyeToy revolutionised motion gaming (controller-less gaming) :D

less raw materials, potentially cheaper to make, definitely cheaper to distribute..

probably other benefits i can't think of right now

Less power usage, if they did what Microsoft did with the slim, combine all the chips into one single SoC it would be cooler, quieter, cheaper to make and uses less power.

At the end of the day, it's a good Blu-ray player. Even if the next PlayStation ends up being physical-media free, there you go.

Highly doubt it. Blu-ray is cheap to manufacture now, and will be even cheaper when Sony is ready to produce the PS4. Sony has a stake in blu-ray, I'd bet money the PS4 will have a blu-ray drive. Plus, not everyone one in the world has access to internet fast enough to download what I imagine to be the next gens massive game files. inFamous 2 which was given to PS+ members for free this month was 15GB, to some people that is too big to download/chews up too much bandwidth. The largest capacity blu-rays are like 100GB. <speculation> Game devs might start using those higher density discs for the next gen games. </speculation>

As far as another hardware revision: Sony, don't bother. I can't imagine you could drive down production and manufacturing costs at this point. I'd think about creating bundles with some of the badass titles they have coming next year. A "Last of Us" bundle? Hell yes! A "GOW Ascension" bundle? Yup!

Sony made very small/thin versions of the PS1 and PS2 - makes me wonder if it's in their interest to sell a 'super-slim' model next year prior to the PS4 launch. at the same time, i wonder who would care for such a device in 2013

Yeah, there were 2 version of the original PS (PSone), 2 version of the PS2 and there are 2 version of the PS3. Seems to be a pattern for them.

Enough of this PS3 on a diet madness. Show me a fat PS4!!

Like 'em large, do ya ;)?

PS2 and PS sold pretty well gaming and console wise well into the life cycle of the next PS. Don't think it matters too much to them. And they likely be needing to produce PS3 before PS4 anyway. IF the lower cost of production worth more than the change in manufacturing, then why not?

For PS2, could they honestly go slimmer? Exactly and Slim PS3 is still a behemoth.

More R&D, smaller hardware = more expensive hardware, etc. If this was true, laptops would be cheaper than desktops. Its not. Also, smaller cases are harder to cool and circulate. This is considering the idea of it being super slim.

I honestly couldn't care less so long as they are similar in size to the current "slim" consoles.

With PS4 one year away, this may seem kind of pointless. Unless, they don't plan to do BC on PS4 and want to keep selling PS3s past PS4 release.

PS3s will sell past PS4 release. The same way PS2s sold past PS3's release.

The images depict a pretty interesting device that is designed with a ridged top, fairly curved and indented front, and oval-shaped bottom. The bottom of the console which will act as the stand in some instances is quite bizarrely shaped and doesn?t look like it "belongs" with the rest of the console. In some ways the design is sleek, but ? judging by the images at least ? it?s a bit too peculiar for my taste.

Design opinions aside, the filing also confirms three new PS3 models: The CECH-4011A, 4011B, and 4011C. The FCC filing leak from last week suggested that the device sported a CECH-4001x model number, so this certainly seems to be legitimate. Tecnoblog reported that at one point, the Brazilian filing included a letter that specifically noted the A, B, and C models were to offer 160GB, 250GB, and 500GB of storage, respectively.

So, as you can see, it?s pretty clear that Sony has a new PS3 revision in the works. But, when will they announce it? Rumors have suggested that it will make its debut at the gamescom conference that takes place in Germany at the end of August. So, is it worth the wait? Beyond the obvious ? aesthetic changes and perhaps cooling improvements ? the PS3 will undoubtedly have similar/the same performance as existing models. But, if you don?t urgently need a console, perhaps it will be worth the wait. And if you really don?t need a console anytime soon, perhaps you can hold it out until the next-generation PlayStation is released, supposedly sometime in 2013.

The spy shots make it look awful, those photoshops make it look awesome.

If its not too expensive I might trade in my slim.
