How to restore Windows Mail on Windows 8.

Recommended Posts

A lot of people want to use Windows Mail from Windows Vista on Windows 8 instead of Windows Live Mail

I have successfully installed Windows Mail from Windows Vista on my Windows 8,and Windows Mail is working on Windows 8 Consumer Preview and on Windows 8 Release Preview. As you can see in my picture taken from my netbook which is running Windows 8 32 bit.

And so I thought I would share with readers how I installed and got Windows Mail working on Windows 8. As it may be helpful to those who want to use Windows Mail on Windows 8.

I have been using Windows Mail on Windows Vista and Windows 7. And I found out how to install Windows Mail on Windows 8 by searching the web. And I came across this thread here on Eight Forums here-http://www.eightforu...indows-8-a.html

And I tried it for myself and it worked for me.

The reason why Windows Mail is not working for many people on Windows 8, is because there is a dill file missing-Msidcrl30.dill,which is needed to run Windows Mail.

The Msidcrl30.dill,dill file is included in both Windows Vista and Windows 7 and can be found in Windows/System 32 folder.

So first you need to copy the Msidcrl30.dill from Windows/System 32 from Windows Vista or Windows 7,and then place it in the Windows/System32 folder on Windows 8.

Then after that you need to go to your Programs file(usually on C/drive) and then delete the inactive Windows Mail program file on Windows 8.To do this you need to install Unlocker, download from C,Net here-http://download.cnet...4-10493998.html

or Take Ownership because the file is locked by Windows. And so you won't be able to delete it, unless you take ownership of the Windows Mail program file, or use Unlocker which unlocks and deletes any file.

Some people just delete the Windows 8 Msoe.dill file in the Windows Mail program file and replace it with the Msoe.dill from Windows Vista. But the easiest way is to just delete the whole Windows 8 Windows Mail program file and all of the files in it. And replace it with the Windows Mail program files from Windows Vista, which can be found in Programs on C/drive on Windows Vista.

Once you have deleted the Windows Mail program file from Windows 8,you need to copy the Windows Mail program file and all of the files in it, from Windows Vista or a Windows Vista computer onto Windows 8. And place the Windows Mail program file in Programs on C/drive on Windows 8.

You can then pin the WinMail shortcut to your desktop, taskbar or start menu, rename the shorcut Windows Mail if you wish. That's it,Windows Mail is now working again on Windows 8. Windows Mail works on all versions of Windows 8,including Windows 8 Release Preview. And the above method also works on Windows 7,except that you don't need to copy the Msidcrl30.dill over from Windows Vista on Windows 7,just the Windows Mail program file. As Msidcrl30.dill is already included in Windows 7.

Most programs from Windows XP and Windows Vista will work on Windows 8 and Windows 7 if you copy all of the program files over.

Many people have asked does Outlook Express work on Windows Vista,Windows 7 or Windows 8. The answer to that is,no it does not. I tried copying the Outlook Express program files from Windows XP onto Windows Vista,Windows 7 and Windows 8 but no,Outlook Express did not work. Outlook Express only works on Windows XP.

But Windows Mail does work on Windows 7 and Windows 8 and can be run alongside Windows live Mail without any problems. Andrea Borman.

Outlook Express is bundled with Internet Explorer 6 in Windows XP, and with IE5 in Windows 2000 and IE4 in Windows 98,95 and Windows NT. But Microsoft unbundled it with IE7 and later versions of Internet Explorer.

And this could be the reason why Outlook Express does not work on Windows Vista and later versions of Windows. Because IE6 is not compatible with Windows Vista,Windows 7 or Windows 8.

See Wikipedia here-http://en.wikipedia....ki/Windows_Mail

And here-http://en.wikipedia....Outlook_Express

But Windows Mail is not bundled with Internet Explorer. And so that could be the reason, or one of the reasons, why Windows Mail works on Windows 7 and Windows 8. If all of the program files are copied over from Windows Vista but Outlook Express does not work. Andrea Borman.

Out of curiosity, why do people want Windows Mail over Windows Live Mail? I've always thought the extra features in WLM were quite useful. Though it's a shame Microsoft stopped bundling either of them with a clean Windows install, I kind of like WM's retro UI.

I'm sorry, but I just don't understand the point of this. You want to use a crappy old e-mail program from a crappy OS on a newer OS that supports a better e-mail program replacement?

i.e. Windows Live Mail and Windows Live products.

I have yet to hear of somebody in my IT profession (or my clients) who say "give me back my Windows Mail from Vista". Everyone I know that has it still says "get me off of it now".

You can run both Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail on the same computer. On Windows 8 I have got Windows Mail and I also have Windows Live Mail 2009,the Windows XP version. Which came with Windows Live Essentials 2009, and I have also got Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail on Windows 7 and Windows Vista.

But even if I could get Outlook Express working on Windows 8,Windows Vista or Windows 7,which I cannot. I am not sure if we could run Windows Mail and Outlook Express on the same computer. As they are very much alike and some of the files are the same.So they may conflict with each other. But I don't know.

But on Windows XP I have outlook Express and Windows Live Mail on the same computer. And there are no problems.

Personally I think Windows Mail was much simpler than Windows Live Mail. The Windows Live Mail UI just looks like a mess.

I got Windows Mail working on Windows 7 and I dont use it much but I like it. Simple and just does what I need it to do. In fact I will ask a question here about it.

In OE there was always a lot of compacting needed to be done or corruption of the folders/files after you hit a certain size limit. I know Windows Mail is somewhat related to OE but is it much stabler than OE?

Less Corruption, etc..?

They have both got their advantages and disadvantages. With Windows Live Mail, the Windows XP version anyway, that I use on Windows 8. You can set up your email account by just entering your Hotmail email address and password. And that connects the the http sever and you can set Windows Live Mail to open in Windows Live Messenger.

So you can email your messenger contacts from Windows Live Mail by clicking on the email link in Messenger without going onto a web browser. And it can automatically set up IMAP without you having to know what the IMAP server is.

But if you want to use POP you have to know what the POP server is an enter it yourself. Also Windows Live Mail has it's own calendar and it displays RSS feeds from the web.

Windows Mail has more simple features and just has POP and IMAP and does not work in Windows Live Messenger. And does not have http server and you have to know what the POP or IMAP server is and enter it yourself. And Windows Mail does not have a calendar, but works with Windows Calendar which you can also install on Windows 7 and Windows 8 from Windows Vista.

Outlook Express can be set to open in Windows Messenger 4.7. But the catch is that Windows Messenger 4.7 is no longer supported and so does not work on Windows XP. It won't let you log in. But you cannot set outlook Express up to open in Windows Live Messenger.

But apart from that Outlook Express and Windows Mail are very similar. And so is Windows Live Mail similar to Outlook Express. And you can install Windows Mail on Windows 8 and Windows 7. Andrea Borman.

Well here is Outlook Express on my Windows XP. And the other pictures are of Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail on my Windows 8 RP. And note that I have got Windows Live Mail 2009,the Windows XP version on Windows 8,not the 2011 version.

And I find that Outlook Express is very stable.Windows Mail,Windxows Live Mail and other email clients like Seamonkey Mail,Thunderbird are all clones of Outlook Express and modelled on Outlook

Express.

Outlook Express was the first email client and all of the other email clients are based on Outlook Express. And I think that Outlook Express,Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail are all very stable. They just look different in appearance that's all.

Windows Live Mail 2011 has the ribbon, but when I saw it I did not like it.Very confusing, as are all of Windows Live Essentials 2011.

Windows Live Essential 2009 the Windows XP version is much better, and works on Windows 8,as it does on Windows 7 and Windows Vista.Andrea Borman.

  • 2 weeks later...

The process seemed to work but beware of moving files back to out of the recovered files section.

I had case where 3 files were in outbox, and the first file had message "Message could not be displayed : Windows Mail encountered an unexpected problem while displaying this message. Check your computer for low memory or low disk space and try again." Net effect was emails could come in, but no emails could be sent out because of the error in the first item of the queue.

in looking at mail folders there were only 2 messages in outbox and therefore the index was wrong but no way of repairing it except as above by deleting the WindowsMail.MSMessageStore as above. Worked fine and all files appeared to be recovered and I could view them but the moment I moved one file from the recovered folder to the Inbox, I got the old error back on any remaining messages in that recovered folder. It would be nice if Microsoft added feature to rebuild the database - the external program Wmutil.exe could not repair my problem either

Hi.

I have tried this but get to a certain point and I get "MSOE.DLL could not be loaded" System files corrupt.

Does anyone have any ideas how to overcome this problem.

I much prefer Windows Mail to the mail programme in Windows 8.1.

Many thanks.

Paul

If you don't like the Mail app in Windows 8, you may consider installing Windows Live Mail - a desktop client that is similar to Winmail but remains supported.
