Both Koreas suffering worst drought in a century

Recommended Posts

North Korea has dispatched soldiers to pour buckets of water on parched fields and South Korean officials have scrambled to save a rare mollusk threatened by the heat, as the worst dry spell in a century grips the Korean peninsula.

Parts of North Korea are experiencing the most severe drought since record keeping began nearly 105 years ago, meteorological officials in Pyongyang said.

The protracted drought is heightening worries about North Korea's ability to feed its people. Two-thirds of North Korea's 24 million people faced chronic food shortages, the United Nations said earlier this month while asking donors for $198 million in humanitarian aid for the country.

Even in South Phyongan and North Hwanghae provinces, which are traditionally North Korea's "breadbasket," thousands of hectares (acres) of crops are withering away despite good irrigation systems, local officials said in recent days.

Reservoirs are drying up, creating irrigation problems for farmers, said Ri Sun Pom, chairman of the Rural Economy Committee of Hwangju County.

It says "both Koreas" but I haven't heard any drought problems in South Korea nor does the article mention it...?

Might want to read the first line closer then..

What if Koreans had poured money into a water system instead of military rubbish ....

Then it would have been wasted money 80% of the time.. It's a Drought.. They happen, and they screw over most countries that get them to a degree.. The reason the West doesn't worry about them as much is in North Americas case, the US and Canada are so vast, if one area falls short, others can make it up.. and in Europe's, all the countries have so much trade over everything, it's rather easily handled.. But for countries that are very dependent on their Own food, and are much more limited in their area, there is only so much that can be piratically done..

Now the North for sure could and should have done more.. but the South, they didn't exactly skimp out on it.. Which is why they generally are good.. The North has needed food from the UN for as long as I can remember.. But then again, I'm not sure that the North, even under ideal conditions, is just able to produce enough to feed themselves..

In any case, we'll feed the North cause we always do, and we'll help the South, cause they are cool.
