Your brain has no role in reflexes. Your spinal cord does.

@Daedroth, here is an example.

Well I never knew that! I always assume the brain had to send signals for basically everything!

I didnt know that either! it wasnt until I took a psych class that I learned, it was pretty cool to learn

You should see all the reflexes babies have when they are born, like the ability to swim :o

The brain does some pretty amazing things when it is trying to protect itself / your body, I guess the combination of chemicals it releases and parts it shuts down would very much feel as if you were having an out of body experience.

It could have very well been a sensory overload. In a situation like this, you are experiencing many different emotions, as well as physical things. The brain could just become overloaded with such chaos, that we just sort of become disattached to reality for the moment.

"Jill Bolte Taylor got a research opportunity few brain scientists would wish for: She had a massive stroke, and watched as her brain functions -- motion, speech, self-awareness -- shut down one by one. An astonishing story."

...And it was as though my consciousness had shifted away from my normal perception of reality, where I?m the person on the machine having the experience, to some esoteric space where I?m witnessing myself having this experience.

...at first I was shocked to find myself inside of a silent mind. But then I was immediately captivated by the magnificence of energy around me. And because I could no longer identify the boundaries of my body, I felt enormous and expansive. I felt at one with all the energy that was, and it was beautiful there

Sounds similar to what she is describing, the 'out of body' type experience. From what she says, it has a lot to do with the right side of our brain.
