Andre Villas-Boas: Tottenham name ex-Chelsea boss as new manager

Former Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas has been appointed new manager of Tottenham Hotspur, two weeks after Harry Redknapp was sacked.

Villas-Boas, 34, returns to football on a three-year contract less than four months after his dismissal at Chelsea.

Former France coach Laurent Blanc, Wigan's Roberto Martinez, Fabio Capello and former Spurs striker Jurgen Klinsmann were linked with the post.

But Tottenham have opted for ex-Porto boss Villas-Boas to replace Redknapp.

Tottenham's decision to sack Redknapp came after weeks of growing tension between the 65-year-old and his chairman Daniel Levy, the situation coming to a head when Redknapp was told the club had decided to go in a fresh direction and look to the future.

Levy assumed responsibility for the recruitment of the new manager and was impressed with Villas-Boas's vision for the club.

Despite winning the Portuguese domestic double and the Europa League at Porto in 2010-11, Villas-Boas was sacked by Chelsea less than 12 months into a three-year contract in March.

Tottenham, who finished fourth in the Premier League table last season, launch the 2012-13 season away to Newcastle, scheduled for 18 August.

Villas-Boas is scheduled to lead Spurs into action against his former club Chelsea on 20 October at White Hart Lane, with the Portuguese due to return to Stamford Bridge on 13 April.

what for Boas or for Spurs? or both

For Spurs. Replace one of the most experienced, respected and astute managers in English football with someone who is inexperienced and did very poorly with a Chelsea team in a short time. Normally, you'd say he wasn't given enough time - but considering his replacement was able to achieve better results with the same team, and he'd done worse than other short term managers (Hiddink) - it's not really a step forward.

I wonder if 'Arrys signings will all leave and attempt to follow wherever he ends up next, or just under perform until they are shifted out (on the cheap), much like one or two players did at Pompey when Judas left.
