Happy Independence Day to all US American Neowinians!

Recommended Posts

A very happy 4th of July to our American members.

Speaking as someone who could be classified as stereotypical leftist European I would like to add a personal note:

Yes, Europeans make fun of you for some of your mannerisms.

Yes, Europeans look at the circus which is your politics and shake their heads. Not that we here have fewer problems, mind you.

Yes, Europeans don't get some parts of your mentality. And I'm not just talking about the second amendment.

But:

No, Europeans don't hate you. Our own culture is heavily influenced by yours for one. And not to forget: You saved our behinds in WWII and the Cold War.

With all that said:

America saved Germany in WW2?

In a way. Would you want to live in a Germany which has won WWII? I wouldn't.

Hell to the yes it did.

Look at the German constitution, it's influenced heavily by the USA.

I like our constitution a lot, so thanks a ton for that!

Beautiful post, Mephistopheles.

Absolutely agree with your words!

Happy Independence Day!

Don't let this thread descend into a who won the war flame thread.

Instead, lets focus on the topic of the thread; Happy Independence Day from the other side of the pond.

Thanks guys :)

I'll be celebrating today by buying a new 2012 Subaru WRX. How are the other fellow American Neowinian's celebrating?

I have to disagree. The USA are just a part from many parts and was not disinterested.

The German constitution is based on the Weimar Republic and "just" needed to pass the allies to avoid a new dictator.

Even GB and France did it, there is no reason to give a special thanks to the USA.

I'm well aware of my nation's history, the special thanks fly out to the US, because the topic came up and it's USA's Independence Day.

Sorry if I made it sound like the US was the only factor for the constitution.

The question what the Grundgesetz is based upon aside (not directly the Weimar Republic constitution - look closely at the Grundgesetz and you'll see how its authors aimed to avoid making the mistakes made in 1919), there are reasons to give special thanks to the US for their role in WWII. Have you ever read about the Lend-Lease program? One could argue that neither the UK nor the USSR would have been able to beat the 3rd Reich without the support of the USA.

Enough of this though, this thread is about celebrating with our friends across the pond.

I let the thread keep positive. But to call me a troll because I disagree my previous speaker is not nice!

Aww, how sweet. Thank you!

Reassuring considering how Americans who are different from the "stereotypes" are half afraid of travelling due to all the perceived prejudice and disdain coming from a lot of other countries. It's good to see someone who knows better reaching out a white flag.

Regardless of the day, hooray for people of all nationalities who are smart, open-minded, aware, and just all around nice, like many folks here on Neowin! :)

If it's any consolation I rather still be governed by England. Besides all the obvious benefits of the government system over ours, we most likely would not have Mit Romney. :(
