Microsoft Secures "XBOX 8" Name

Maybe MS is following Google and Mozilla and want to have an unnecessarily large number on the end of their products.

  • 2 weeks later...

They can't call it Infinity, then what happens next? "Infinity +1?" Like the stupid one-upping game you always played as a kid?

Besides... meh. My Xbox is metrofied enough as it is. I know they're going to do it anyway, but, damn. It was so sleek and nice-looking and then with the latest UI update it's all so flat and boring.

Well... they're already well ahead with the 360 then. 8 seems to be regressing.

Which is why the whole "Xbox 8" name makes no sense. Now I agree that the 8 could be infinity which would make more sense because i'm sure MS is looking to make the next xbox be somehow upgradeable, be it though more software updates or maybe even a combination of future cloud gaming services. Xbox Live Gold starts to look better if you also get access to something like OnLive out of it.

If they're looking to make it upgradable, perhaps Xbox 8 will be the new name for the software, which could be upgradeable when Windows 9/Xbox 9 is released (if the Xbox isn't running a version of Windows by that time). If that is the case, they may call the hardware something else or even label it "the new Xbox" or "Xbox," similarly to what Apple are doing with the iPad.

If they go with the infinity name, how will the url look? Probably the infinity sign on it's side (a no. 8!)seeing as that's the only way that they could do it. (and they'll registerer the full word too)

Xbox infinity to me would be like vista when they were in their non numbered scheme.

I hope they go to xbox8 just so it matches up with windows/windowsphone. Or even just "Xbox" and update the core OS with versions so they would stay in sync with windows (and leverage the model that way).

What's wrong with Xbox.com?

Nothing but assuming they do use the infinity name, they will likely have a pre release site and after release, the same url would forward to xbox.com

Was that sarcasm? Or did you really not link the number 8 to Microsoft's other upcoming products? ;)

LOL I really hope you're joking... That's the first thing crossing my mind.

I didn't stop to think about it at all. I just saw what Microsoft had done, then read the thread. That's why :)

So, lemee get this straight: Just like Windows 6.1 is Windows 7 & Windows 6.2 is Windows 8, Xbox 3 is gonna be Xbox 8? Microsoft needs to learn to count...
