New Mac User

Recommended Posts

I just picked up a 2011 model 13" MacBook Pro and I'm loving it so far. I got it for about $100 below retail which was really nice. I'm a first time Mac user, so what programs do you guys find essential? All I really have for it is MS Office 2011 and Skype. I will install VLC soon. Is there a program similar to Notepad++ for Mac? Any other helpful info would also be appreciated, thanks!

If you want to see what software other people use or recommend, take a peek at; http://osx.iusethis.com/

It doesn't list all applications in the world and lacks here and there but I've found some funky little tools from there.

Also if you miss some application that you know on Windows or Linux, you can use; http://alternativeto.net/ to find the equivalent or something near it.

I have been searching around for must have apps on my new Mac over the past few weeks. Luckily my employer has a license agreement for both Office 2011 and Adobe CS Suites.

Other than those though, I have found the following apps useful.

-Chrome for obvious reasons here.

-Adium for chat services, find it to be the best Mac chat client.

-vlc player

-Spotify

-The Unarchiver (available on app store) (Seems to be one of the best, like winrar is for Windows)

-RSS reader app, I have tried 2 or 3 different ones. Seems like Reeder and Mocachinno (Cant remember exact name currently and I am at work) I just downloaded for like 2 dollars are the best. Both lack gestures on trackpad though which is the biggest deal breaker for me as far as the RSS App reader goes. So I use google reader website the most currently.

-There is a free cheatsheet shortcut app in the app store, you hold down a defined key in any app, and it shows all the shortcut commands available. Great for new mac users trying to learn the keyboard navigation and quick keys.

-Tweetdeck if you are a social network person. Great to set it as a full screen and just 3 finger gester to that screen to see all the latest tabs you setup.

-utorrent

Currently drawing a blank on any other apps. I will continue to check this thread out myself and see what others suggest.
