aero will probably be "finished" by the late alphas, but it won't be bug free. as for it leaking, that's anyone's guess. leaks aren't planned... :ermm: "we" might not actually see it until beta, but that doesn't mean it wasn't there before we saw it.

also, there are different labs that compile different builds of longhorn. when aero was shown off, it was from a different lab than where the leaked build came from. that's why everyone with longhorn can't do what they did on the screen...

aero has never been shown off. If you're referring to WinHEC, Microsoft only showed off what the Desktop Composition Engine (DCE) and Avalon can do. If you're referring to the "screenshots" paul thurrott posted showing off what he thinks is Aero, those are just mockups, and don't show any real part of what aero will do. the reason we can't do what Microsoft did on screen is because the DCE hasn't been fully implemented in a main build yet, at least one that has leaked; not because aero isn't there. avalon/dce and aero are related, but yet are completely different from one another. Avalon/DCE powers Aero, which is the new user interface. DCE/Avalon provides window animation and other eye candy effects, and the two shouldn't be confused.

i vote for late betas.... Aero is Microsoft's 'weapon' for visuals... they will want to keep it last... that way, not many will have seen it to copy it!

Aero should be a completely redesigned user interface, but this may have some consequences for a lot of the older products. Besides, Linux will have the edge by the time Longhorn is released if they can get their act together. But as for my prediction for when Aero will be fully implemented, I'm willing to bet that it will be around Beta 2. The Luna interface was not completely initiated until Beta 2, so that backs up my prediction.

don't compare aero to luna, they aren't similar. Luna was a skin for windows, aero is the user interface for windows. aero isn't nearly as simple as Luna, there's going to be a lot more bugs to be found by testers, so don't put it on the same timetable as you would put a skin

Kinda like how what Quartz and Quartz Extreme are on Mac OS X?! :D

I really hope Avalon / Aero technologies really bring on the Windows desktop. I know since moving from XP to OS X, with all the effec, Eye Candy and Quartz Extreme effects, its made working with my computer a joy! :D
