Borderlands will not install, physxcudart_20.dll issue

Recommended Posts

It begins to install but eventually shows:

The program can't start because physxcudart_20.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

When I click OK, borderlands.exe actually runs but I am only presented with a black screen.

I leave the black screen and after around 15-20 seconds, the game closes and the installer shows:

Error 1722. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.

I click OK and the installation rolls back, resulting in:

Installation ended prematurely because of an error.

I have a Core i5-750 CPU, 8 GB RAM and a NVIDIA GeForce 560 (latest 301.42 drivers, which comes with PhysX 9.12.0213).

I have tried to install PhysX_8.10.29_SystemSoftware manually from the disk but of course it notifies me I already have a later version installed.

I have the retail game, not the Steam version.

Any ideas?

EDIT: I have found a solution!

I tried removing PhysX 9.12.0213 drivers then installing the game, didn't help.

I also tried this but that option wasn't available to me as the game hadn't even started copying files yet (well, kind of - look below).

I then realized that the game files were already installed to the location I was installing to! That's because I install games to a secondary HDD (primary drive is an SSD with Windows on it) and I had reformatted my SSD a few months ago and didn't remove the game files from the secondary HDD!

Deleting the \2K Games\Gearbox Software\Borderlands folder then running the installer again worked a treat!
